One of the characteristics of a smoking addiction is that it can be very difficult to quit, and is subject to remission. However, there are different kinds of stop smoking medications that can help a smoker quit. They are not 100% effective, and still rely on the smoker's determination and discipline, but proper use can improve quitting chances by as much as 50%.

1. Nicotine Patches. Nicotine patches are small, adhesive patches that are attached to the skin anywhere between the waist and neck, and slowly release minute amounts of nicotine into the bloodstream through the pores. It is easy to use and available without prescriptions. However, there is a chance that your skin may be allergic to it. Try to test it on an unseen area such as the back of the neck or the shoulders first.

2. Nicotine Gums. Nicotine gums, as the name implies, are chewing gums that contain nicotine, and helps pacify cravings while you are chewing it. It is also available without any prescriptions needed, however, it is used differently from normal chewing gum in the sense that it should not be chewed perpetually, but merely placed against the side of the mouth after a couple of chews.

3. Nicotine Inhalers. Nicotine Inhalers are preferred by lots of smokers because it gives low doses of nicotine using the same physical motions done with smoking, such as hand-to-mouth motions. However, nicotine inhalers require a prescription from a doctor and cannot be bought over the counter on your own.

These are the most basic stop smoking medications and might help you if you have a strong will power.
