If you really want to know what happens when you stop smoking and you have made up your mind to quit once and for all, I can give you a few tips. Read the following descriptions of what can happen during your withdrawal period and you will be better equipped to meet your challenge head on! I won my battle over nicotine and you can too!

Normally pleasant people can turn cranky, irritable, and moody shortly after their last cigarette. This could happen to you too. Why? It is because your body will start craving nicotine. Take a brisk walk or a hot relaxing bath instead of giving in and lighting up. This symptom will usually last 2 to 4 weeks.

Hunger pains will attack you all hours of the day. Since your mouth is not busy smoking, you get the urge to eat. Your brain no longer knows if it should crave nicotine or food. Try to eat healthier than you did when you smoked. Try crunching on raw vegetable snacks to keep your mouth busy. Again, this symptom should pass in 2 to 4 weeks.

You may develop coughing, post nasal drip or dry throat. Actually, these can be good signs. When you cough alot and bring up phlegm, your lungs are trying to clear themselves. It is good to cough up as much as you can. Hopefully, this symptom will only last a few days.

You could develop some dizziness because your body is now getting more oxygen. It just needs a little time to figure out what is going on. Again, this is a good thing and should pass in 1 or 2 days.

The absolute worst symptom of all will be your craving for another cigarette. Nicotine is highly addictive and your brain will not give up begging for it! This symptom will be strongest in the first few days. Unfortunately, the cravings could continue for months or years but they will not be as strong. This side effect needs to be fought with every available resource. First, try waiting it out. It will pass in a few minutes. Also, try drinking water, take a walk, or find an online quit smoking support group. A nicotine replacement product would work for this symptom too. You can find one in the form of gum, lozenge, patch, inhaler or spray.

Freeing yourself of your nicotine addiction may require a great battle. It is a battle that can be won! You can do it! Now that you know what happens after you stop smoking, arm yourself with the resources that will make you victorious over the withdrawal symptoms.

Smoking cessation represents the single most important step that smokers can take to enhance the length and quality of their lives. But quitting smoking is easier said than done. When you suddenly quit smoking, it sets off a series of uncomfortable physical and psychological effects. Since these effects are hard to resist, the smoker often recommences his smoking habit. To have the best chance of quitting successfully, it is important that you realize the true dangers of nicotine on the body, how to deal with undesirable after effects of quitting smoking and - most importantly - how to overcome the withdrawal symptoms and stay away from smoking.

Nicotine, a drug found in cigarettes, is highly addictive - in fact as addictive as heroin or cocaine. Hence, in no time a person becomes physically and emotionally addicted to and sometimes dependent on nicotine. Nicotine produces pleasant feelings that make the smoker want to smoke more. As the nervous system adapts to nicotine, smokers tend to increase the number of cigarettes they smoke, and therefore the amount of nicotine in their blood. Over time, the smoker reaches a certain nicotine level and then smokes to maintain this level of nicotine. When such a smoker suddenly tries to quit, the nicotine levels in the body drops and creates an irresistible urge to surge back. These effects can lead the smoker to start smoking cigarettes again to boost blood levels of nicotine back to a level where there are no symptoms.

When smokers try to cut back or quit, the lack of nicotine leads to certain characteristic withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms are especially obvious in the case of chain smokers who suddenly stop using tobacco or greatly reduce the amount smoked. These effects of quitting smoking that generally start within a few hours of the last cigarette and peak about 2 to 3 days later, may include depression, sleep disturbances, irritability, headache, fatigue and increased appetite. Some people may also experience conditions like restlessness, dizziness and feelings of frustration and anger. In most people, these symptoms can last for a few days to up to several weeks.

The withdrawal symptoms can be both physiological and emotional. While physically the body reacts to the absence of nicotine, the smoker is mentally faced with giving up a habit that may seem like a major behaviour makeover. Studies have shown that smokers must deal with both the physical and psychological dependence to be successful at quitting and staying quit. Both these effects must be adequately addressed for a successful quitting process to work.

When you stop smoking there is a good chance you will experience a stop smoking symptom or two. These are caused by the withdrawal effects of nicotine and by the side effects of changes in your body from not inhaling the toxins in tobacco smoke.

An unpleasant stop smoking symptom may give you an excuse to start smoking again. Don't let it!

Stop Smoking Symptom #1: Chesty Cough

When you stop smoking, your lungs are presented with an opportunity to clean themselves. As this will be the first time in probably many years for them to clean themselves up, they will go for it! It is perfectly natural for them to do this too.

As time passes, your chestyness should subside as your lungs overcome that first cleaning frenzy. If your cough persists, you should go and see your doctor as a persistent cough could be an indication on lung cancer.

Stop Smoking Symptom #2: Sore Throat

When you stop smoking, the environment in your mouth and nose changes from what has been normal whilst you were smoking. When you smoke, there is a need for your mouth, nose and throat to be well lubricated to cope with the tobacco smoke. When you stop, the lubrication levels are excessive to your needs.

The result of this mucus production in an excessive post-nasal drip, which means mucus is falling into the back of your mouth and throat from your nose. This causes a sore throat much like the sore throats you experience when you have a cold.

Stop Smoking Symptom #3: Coughs and Colds

The change in your mouth, nose, throat and lung environment from stopping smoking is considerable. There is an excessive amount of fluid sloshing around and this provides an ideal environment for bugs to make themselves at home. The net result is an increased likelihood of suffering coughs, colds and sore-throats.

It may seem to you that you were better off smoking because you never used to suffer so much as a smoker but these infections are transient and should only be short lived. Put up with them as they are a price worth paying for the long term health benefits of not smoking.

Stop Smoking Symptom #4: Bad Breath

When you smoke, your mouth waters. As a new non-smoker, instead of getting this rush of mouth watering 20 times a day, your mouth can become parched by comparison to how you would normally be. This dryer environment often causes a build up of unpleasant anaerobic bacteria at the back of the mouth. These bacteria give off 'volatile sulphurous compounds' that don't smell good.

To help overcome the imminent bad breath, drink water regularly and have low calorie mints or sugar free gum to hand at all times to save yourself from embarrassment.

Stop Smoking Symptom #5: Headaches and Light-Headedness

When you stop smoking your blood's ability to operate improves rapidly. When you smoked, your blood became handicapped from carbon monoxide but this handicapping passes very quickly once you stop.

Your blood sugar levels will change too when you quit because the action of nicotine on insulin in your blood is no longer present. The net effect of these two factors is that you will have more oxygen and less sugar in your blood, bathing your brain in an unfamiliar environment. A common result of this change is headaches or light-headedness.

Take some non-prescription painkillers, drink plenty of water and wait for it to subside. If it persists for more than a week, go and see your doctor but don't start smoking again!

Stop Smoking Symptom #6: Constipation

When you smoke, the nicotine in tobacco affects your intestines, relaxing the muscles. This helps your digestion and keeps you regular. When you quit smoking, this therapeutic effect of nicotine is no longer there and you may suffer from constipation.

Drink plenty of water and try to up the fibre in your diet to help the situation. Fruit and vegetables of any sort should help along with wholegrain cereals or bread.

Stop Smoking Symptom #7: Mood Swings

You are in a state of nicotine withdrawal and as mentioned above, your brain is bathed in high oxygen, low sugar level blood that it is not used to. Much as alcohol can change your behaviour, a lack of nicotine, more oxygen and less sugar can easily have you change your behaviour. Luckily, it is short lived and should pass within a couple of weeks but to help, try to avoid alcohol and caffeine where possible to minimize the situation.

Stop Smoking Symptom #8: Insomnia

For much the same reason as the mood swings, you may also suffer from insomnia as a result of nicotine withdrawal. To help overcome this, use any methods you can think of to help yourself relax including avoiding any stimulants such as tea or coffee after around 6pm.

Many smokers know that smoking results in rotting their bodies. So they ultimately quit it after one or other time during their lives. There can be both positive and negative effects of quitting smoking. For the initial days when you have stopped smoking you will notice a conspicuous change in your system which appears as dipping level of blood sugar. Ostensible symptoms emerges just because of the fact that your blood sugar amount lessens which thereby dampens the feeling of dizziness, lack of concentration and other behavioral changes. Lowering levels of blood sugar in your body resembles lack of oxygen in the system of every living being. Thus, you will also feel sudden hankering of sweet items.

When you stop smoking, your system tends to adjust itself with the changed situation. Chances of heart attack tend to decline drastically with the passage of time. Nerve endings start to regrow which leads to enhanced ability to smell and taste. Bronchial tubes of the system relax and you breathe much easily which makes better lung function and blood circulation. Moreover, your personality improves, you become more socially acceptable. Also, most importantly you can also save a lot of money. If you will spend that money on your loved ones they will become closer to you.

But effects of quitting smoking can be negative too like after you stop stomachache, vomiting starts which is accompanied with developing the probability of hypothermia. You will tend to have more food due to declining blood sugar levels which will lead to weight gain. This happens because of lack of sugar level which develops a yen for sweet foods and items. This emerges as an irritating symptom. People after quitting smoking eat a lot thereby tends to gain weight during time. To avoid such symptoms, it is considered best to have intakes of several juices during day times which not only fulfills the need of body for the time being but also proves great for your health. Thus, quitting smoking habit can prove to be tough through whatever method you choose but ultimately the effects of quitting smoking can be immense and signals a beginning of much healthier life.

If you are like I was, thinking and feeling that there was no way to learn how to stop smoking cigarettes after it had been such a huge part of my life for 25 years, then I have some great news for you...I have quit smoking without spending a fortune on worthless pills, patches, or gum...in 1 week. And I am dead serious that you can do the exact same. I'm so excited to be sharing this information with you that will change your life and get you off those cigarettes. Here are 6, simple tips that you can use to learn how to stop smoking now:

1) Stop smoking for your family or loved ones...not your own health.

2) Begin exercising everyday - just a mile or 2, along with some push-ups/sit-ups is plenty. I know that this may seem cliche and ineffective...but, as this tip was referred to me by a 47-year old, ex smoker, it has worked for me and you won't lose anything by trying it.

3) Start recording all the money you spend on cigarettes each week and think about how much money that you could save by stopping.

4) Set goals for yourself. Write down your goals and look at them everyday. The power of goal setting is very underestimated in today's society.

5) Start drinking a lot more water, not flavored water or gatorade, just good ol'fashioned H20.

6) When you crave a cigarette...drink a cup of pure, herbal tea...you'd be surprised how effective this tip can be. I found this out by accident when I was trying to learn how to stop smoking cigarettes when I just drank a cup of hot, herbal, green tea for the heck of it and actually felt better and didn't crave cigarettes as much.

Many people, many of whom are ex-smokers, believe that quitting smoking is hard. Truth is, you can quit smoking right now, easily, and without any withdrawal symptoms...all by quitting in a different manner from most people.

The most important thing to remember about quitting smoking is that you believe that it is hard, and that very belief makes it hard for you to quit. Trying to quit through all the other hokey "methods" out there doesn't really help, either.

The second thing is that when you stop, you aren't giving up anything. You're freeing yourself from the awful prison that cigarettes have you in, and that's one of the most liberating things you can do for yourself...as long as you know that. Otherwise, you'll be fighting against yourself the entire time, cursing yourself for trying to stop.

When you realize that quitting is an entirely positive thing (and that there isn't a thing to miss about smoking), you won't even be bothered by other smokers, or normal things that trigger you to smoke. The key is to understand the difference between what you think cigarettes do for you (relaxation, etc.) and what they actually do (temporarily relieve the anxiety and lack of concentration that they themselves cause) and that makes it very easy to stop.

Knowing where you need to be to quit, and actually being there mentally is the hardest thing that you'll need to do to quit smoking. Luckily, that's just a bit harder than reading this article.

There are several withdrawal symptoms people who quit smoking experience. These symptoms are basically identical to those of depression, which is why some forms of antidepressant medications can be used in treatments for smoking cessation.

Researchers have found that depressed people essentially have the same altered levels of neurotransmitters in their bodies, and too little activity among neurotransmitters in the areas of the brain that control mood and emotion will certainly result in the same indicators.

There are different types of antidepressants, and they interact with your neurotransmitters in different ways. They can change the rate at which the neurotransmitters are either created or broken down by the body, or block the process by which neurotransmitters are recycled and reused. They can block the re-absorption of neurotransmitters into the nerve cells and thereby leave some available to trigger activity among nerve cells, or they can interfere with the binding of a neurotransmitter to neighboring nerve cells, thus leaving the neurotransmitter available for other bodily functions.

Specifically to help smokers trying to quit the habit, MAO inhibitors are ideal because they decrease the rate at which neurotransmitters are broken down by the body so they are more available to interact with nerve cells, or neurons.

In the United States, you can get prescriptions for such MAO inhibitors as phenelzine and tranylcypromine from most mental health professionals, especially when they are convinced that your condition is sufficiently critical. To regulate the levels of serotonin, you may have to take serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors such as venlafaxine or the more common bupropion, sold as Wellbutrin.

Stop smoking antidepressant medications are ideal because they help you bide the rough tide and stay focused while you are trying to quit smoking. Once you are way past the withdrawal phase, you should discontinue the treatment.

When you embark on your nicotine withdrawal or quit smoking process, you will experience many quit smoking withdrawal symptoms including having a greater urge to light up a cigarette. Why is this so?

Well, this is because when you decide to completely kick off the habit, you are depriving your bodies of the nicotine that you have grown quite accustomed to after years of smoking cigarettes. Nicotine is actually one of the most addictive substances and it really does take a while for the body to get rid of both its effect and presence.

So if you are a smoker who wants to quit and are tired of all the harmful effects it has, you need to be aware of some of the obstacles that you are likely to face. The most common quit smoking withdrawal symptoms include anxiety, having trouble sleeping, depression, cravings for a cigarette, and an increase in appetite for food as well as concentration problems.

By being knowledgeable about these things before hand, you can work out a kind of game plan on how to deal with these urges and symptoms. Some people become concerned about not being able to keep up and relapse back into smoking.

But today, there are plenty of products available that can help people cope. These products include nicotine patch which can help suppress the urge to light up a cigarette. Of course, these remedies can not be with you for long as you need to reduce your reliance on nicotine.

There are also other prescription drugs such as the Wellbutrin and Zyban that can help you out. These medications are said to be very helpful and effective when it comes to relieving the other symptoms that comes with quit smoking withdrawals. Do consult your doctor as to which one is more suited to you. The urge to light up a cigarette would come and go all throughout your day. The longer you can make do without lighting up, the less extreme the urges would be.

As soon as you start the process of quitting, you would feel these urges and they are tell-tale signs that your body is detoxifying itself of the nicotine. If you can, do you best to wait it out instead of lighting up. Try and distract yourself by doing other things or better yet, learn a few meditation chants to help clear your mind. Stock up on some healthy food that you can munch on instead of lighting up another cigarette.

Also, do not forget to let your loved ones know about what you are going through. You will experience erratic mood swings and unless they know why you are acting that way, they would mostly likely write you off as a jerk. Lastly, keep your eye on the prize and do not let quit smoking withdrawal symptoms throw you off course. Remember why you want to quit and stay with it.

Chantix is an oral medication prescribed to individuals who are trying to quit smoking and is non-addictive. It also diminishes the taste of cigarette and kills the craving for smoke.  It is an alternative to other smoking cessation drugs and nicotine replacement therapy. Chantix is approved for use in adults and is taken for 12 weeks; patients who successfully quit may take an additional 12 weeks of the medication to increase their likelihood of long-term cessation.

Chantix is a cutting-edge treatment specifically developed to block nicotine's effect in the brain. The dosage, 1 mg twice daily after lunch and dinner, nearly doubles the likelihood of quitting versus Zyban and nearly quadruples the likelihood over placebo.

The data that led to the approval of this drug came from 6 clinical trials including more than 3,600 patients; 5 of the 6 studies were randomized controlled clinical trials in which it was shown to be superior to placebo. Chantix is a pill and is taken twice a day. Talk to your doctor about proper use, dosage, and side effects. It's easy to use, and is usually well tolerated. Some people taking Chantix experience nausea, which can usually be avoided by taking it with food.

If the clinically proven effectiveness of Chantix is making you think again about your stance on quit smoking pills, you are not alone. It's the only quit smoking pill right now which makes quitting smoking easier than imagined. Smokers who get the drug are also able to enroll in a free quitting support program.

Your doctor will determine if Chantix is right for you based on your medical history and the prescription drugs you are already taking. Physicians and patients have to make an informed decision about whether this drug is suitable, but in order to do that, it's important that they exchange some important information. For example, physicians should inquire about past psychiatric illnesses before they prescribe and patients should be educated to volunteer this information.

Chantix is available in all leading medical stores. It is also available online. It has so many benefits that people who quit smoking with it don't face any problems and easily get over with the habit. Unlike the other anti-smoking tools, Chantix is not a nicotine replacement. It works like nicotine but is not addictive and is proven to produce results in the fight against tobacco addiction. Keep that in mind as you consider whether it is something you want to try. What is promising about Chantix is that it works by dealing with both the psychological as well as the physical addiction to smoking, unlike many other products available.

If there was one person who correctly portrayed how hard it is to quit smoking, then there is no one as right as Mark Twain. He said that it is quite simple because he surely has done it a thousand times! Though many people just dropped the habit like that, they usually took it up within the next few days!

To ensure that you quit this habit successfully, there are many quit smoking aids that are available. Before committing to a particular product, it would be best if you could take your doctor or your dentist's advice.

Most smokers are more afraid of the withdrawal symptoms than they are of quitting. Such withdrawal symptoms include anxiety, fatigue, cough, anger, insomnia and in many cases rapid weight gains too. Such fear of withdrawal symptoms usually stops people from even giving smoking aids a try.

Here are some of the time tested methods that would help you quit smoking really soon.

Nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches are the most popularly known aids to help a person kick the smoking habit. These products work on the nicotine replacement therapy. These aids would give your body the necessary amount of nicotine that it needs without the harmful chemicals that are found in a cigarette. Since these products have nicotine in them, there is a very high chance of re-addiction.

You can also find prescription based drugs that are nicotine free. Since these drugs do not have nicotine and since they are prescribed, they have to taken under a medical practitioner's care. Alternatively bupropion hydrochloride, an anti-depressant, is well known to eradicate withdrawal symptoms and thus help kick the habit. Champix, is also well known to reduce the level of satisfaction derived from smoking, thus helping you to kick the habit.

It would be best if you could follow a particular process when looking forward to quitting cigarettes. Always ensure that you decide to give up the habit, make the necessary preparations and then go ahead and choose the right aid to help you quit smoking.

The dangers of smoking are real and imminent. That is why if you have stopped smoking cigarettes and have been trying your best to stay clean from nicotine, you are doing yourself a pretty huge favor. Admittedly though, quitting is very difficult. You have probably heard about the tough times that people like you who tried to stop smoking cigarettes have experienced. If this is your first time to try and quit the habit, then be prepared to experience various smoking withdrawal symptoms at different periods.

Physical Withdrawal Symptoms

It is said that the first couple of weeks is the most crucial in the road to a cigarette-free life. This is when the smoking withdrawal symptoms are at their mightiest. This is due to the fact that the body at this time is not yet used to the absence of nicotine; it manifests its shock via several physical (or physiological) symptoms, including nausea, sweating, and a tingling sensation in the limbs. The nausea is actually a result of the body's craving for a light; your head will feel heavy and you will feel the urge to vomit even when you did not eat all.

Mental Withdrawal Symptoms

If you had been smoking for a very long time before you decided to finally quit, no doubt your body had already developed a chemical dependency on nicotine. When you quit smoking cigarettes, the physical symptoms will be nothing compared to the mental symptoms that will show themselves gradually. Smokers who suddenly quit are prone to having tantrums. Irritability and anxiety will not be uncommon during your waking hours, and insomnia will most probably plague your nights. You will be subjected to feelings of hopelessness, remorse, guilt, and anger, among many others. Depression is likely to set in.

Heavy smokers are not the only ones at risk of the said mental symptoms. Almost every moderate smoker also experiences the same emotional reactions. The need to have a cigarette will become stronger in a matter of days; eight weeks is the average length of time in which the most dreadful smoking withdrawal symptoms persist.
