Smoking is the number one preventable cause of death and disease - that should be enough to get you to quit the habit. But if you want more motivation you need to understand what smoking is and why quitting is so good for you. The nicotine in tobacco is as addictive as cocaine or heroin! That's why it is so hard to quit and why the desire to smoke just keeps increasing. The addiction is not just physical but also mental and emotional. Smoking becomes a crutch to provide artificial support to you, support you do not really need. Research shows that the sooner you decide to quit and act on the decision, the easier it is to follow through.

Withdrawal symptoms are tough, like with any major addiction - nausea, fatigue, flatulence, irritability, lack of concentration and weight gain are just some of the symptoms. Mood swings can be a major problem. But once you get over this hump, the feeling of being in better health and in control of your life makes it all worth while.

However, some quitting smoking benefits are far more immediate and knowing these can improve your motivation level. Even if you cannot actually notice the changes, just knowing what is happening will make you feel good. Within 20 minutes of your last smoke, your elevated blood pressure levels and heart functioning return to normal. The amount of carbon monoxide in your system drops noticeably in 24 hours and your breathing becomes easier.

Within one year you are less vulnerable to lung diseases and your breathing improves. For every year you do not smoke, you increase your overall life expectancy. Normal illnesses are easier to diagnose, treat and recover from. Non-smokers say that one of the biggest quitting smoking benefits is how much the quality of their lives improved after kicking the habit.

The dangers of smoking during and after pregnancy are well documented and the effects of parents smoking on the health of children cannot be ignored. Nor can the dangers that a smoker exposes his family to, through second-hand smoke. Another of the major quitting smoking benefits is that you are no longer endangering the lives of your loved ones along with your own.

Smoking can ruin your looks and affect your skin tone, color and overall appearance. Quitting will bring you back to your normal self - maybe not overnight, but soon enough. Along with your appearance, your social life will improve. People tend to avoid smokers. Once you kick the habit, you will be welcome into places where people had reservations about associating with you because of your addiction to smoking.

There are so many quitting smoking benefits. Think about it and you will find many more that relate specifically to you. Now what are you waiting for?

To stop smoking, smokers need strong motivation to drive them to kick the nicotine habit. Indeed, there can be strong personal reasons, pressure from peers and family members or due to social stigma attached with smoking to give up the habit.

The following list tries to address the psychological and emotional side of benefits smokers can derive when they take the arduous journey of quitting smoking.

1. Smoking is no more 'cool'

Cigarette smoking no more considered cool compared to 70s and 80s when everyone smoked. The smoking habit considered unhealthy. Cigarette companies generated the 'cool' image due to cleverly designed commercials. For someone intelligent, the appeal of coolness is diminishing given the health hazard the smoking habit carries. There are mandatory ghastly looking images on cigarette packs in some countries not only horrifying, but also a revelation.

2. Stop buying packs of cigarette saves you lot of money

For a moment, imagine how many cigarettes a smoker smokes in a year on an average 20 cigarettes a day. Cool 7000 cigarettes a year! Astounding, right? No! Try the numbers if one smoked for the last 10 years. That totals to 70,000 cigarettes. Now, that is worrying. We have not considered special occasions, weekends; jaunts to nightclubs where one tend to smoke more than usual, sometimes two times the average. This puts the numbers even higher.

Just do the math and see how much cigarette one has burnt in her life. Interestingly, the amount of money one spends just to satisfy addiction is staggering. It is fraction of a dollar, no doubt, for each cigarette. However, how much money one spends on buying cough medicine, breath fresheners, throat fresheners, teeth whiteners, and visiting dentists just because one wanted to be normal?

3. Increased Confidence levels once one stop smoking.

You look like a rock star to others who are trying to quit smoking. Apparently, almost every other smoker wishes to stop smoking one day. However, how many honestly stop smoking and never become a smoker again in their lives? You will be surprised to find out how people expression can change when one mention that she quit smoking. It is shocking for most of smokers and pleasant surprise for many of her not smoking friends. Just imagine how tall she can walk!

4. Worry no more about how bad your breath smell in front of clients or customers

The cigarette smoke smells nasty. Smoking creates bad odor in your mouth and few feet around you. The smell lingers longer if you smoke in an air-conditioned room. You make every other not smoking person to suffer because of your habit. Does it sound selfish? Perhaps, yes. Stop smoking and never worry about the stink again.

5. Save astounding amounts of time

Can you imagine how much time one save by stop smoking? If you are a busy person and a smoker, you can gain lot by stop smoking. It is a simple arithmetic.

One may argue that he or she is smoking the cigarette while working. The smoker while smoking unknowingly idle away productive minutes. How much time you end up wasting just for smoking every year? You be the judge.

6. No embarrassing stares at you

Nowadays, many public places are out of bounds for smoking. However, when smokers lit a cigarette in places with children, senior citizens, pregnant women, and sick persons, for example, invite cold stare from others. It is embarrassing for both the guilty smoker and others. You can walk guilt free when you quit.

7. Feel healthier and fresh day after day

We know there are nearly 2000 types of chemicals produced while smoking and some are hazardous and carcinogen! Smoking can cause irreparable damage to mouth, gums, teeth, and lungs. We are wise enough to stay away from death inviting sticks.

8. Help your society to become smoke free and earn good karma

Leading by example, you can help others to quit smoking. You can motivate others who are trying to quit smoking. You will earn good karma by doing this.

9. Make your family members happy and healthy

Do you know how happy your friends, family members and others feel for you when you stop smoking? It is certainly a feel good factor for you. You help them to eliminate passive effects of smoking. The whole environment becomes healthy. You will love it.

10. Develop cleaner and healthier living environment

Imagine the cigarette butts, empty boxes that thrown around on the street by un-mindful smokers. By quitting smoking, you are helping to keep the clean environment and smoke free. Our world beset with global pollution. By quitting, you can contribute positively to the global cause.

Smoking is emotional slavery, and what's worse: it is self-imposed slavery. While there are almost uncountable quitting smoking benefits, emotional liberty to me seems to be the most valuable and desirable of them all.

Don't get me wrong, I surely don't want to belittle that negative effects smoking has on your health, nor do I deny that this nasty habit is an utter waste of money. Yet, what can be worse than having lost control over your daily actions? What can be worse than to be driven by an incessant feeling of having to light up a cigarette, even if you only just put out the last one?

We put so much value into our freedom and independence in all aspects of life - we whine and moan about society forcing us into doing this or that ... andstill, when it comes to smoking, we deliberately forfeit our freedom, give in to an urge that is not imposed on us by society, but only ourselves ... this is nothing short of absurd.

I am sure you know perfectly well what I am talking about, even if you have learned to deny it. Remember the last time you ran out of cigarettes late in the evening? Remember how it was raining and freezing cold outside? Yet still, you put on your shoes and rain-coat, left the cosy warmth of home, just to get that pack of cigarettes you believe you cannot survive the night without. An amazing feat indeed - especially if you consider that you would not even get up from the sofa if you'd have to put an important letter into the mailbox.

Quitting smoking is not only about health or financial benefits. It is also about getting back your emotional peace. Fight for it, you WILL succeed.

Have you ever wondered what if you quit smoking now? How will your body react to the absence of nicotine? How will you feel mentally knowing that you have just had your last cigarette? Smoking cessation is not a trivial issue, as you would probably admit after making several failed attempts to quit smoking. But you may be amazed to know that with the passing of each tobacco-free moment after your last cigarette, your health will improve from good to better. Let's have a look at what you can expect after quitting.

After 20 minutes

You will feel the first benefit of quitting just 20 minutes after you had your last cigarette. Your blood pressure and pulse rate will become normal, so will your body temperature of hands and feet.

After 8 hours

Had your last cigarette last night at bedtime? After a 8-hour sleep, you will feel better as carbon monoxide level in blood will come down to normal and oxygen level will increase to normal.

After a day

It's been 24 hours you haven't touched your pack of Marlboro or Winston and great news is awaiting you - your risk of getting a heart attack has lessened significantly.

After 2 days

This is when you will be most likely to feel irritable and restless for nicotine. Known as nicotine withdrawal symptoms, people have to get through the toughest period a couple of days after they quit. By this time, your damaged nerve endings will start to regrow and your sense of smell and taste will be better than before.

Champix can be a good choice for you if you want to successfully cope with nicotine withdrawal symptoms. This prescription medicine has varenicline tartrate as its active ingredient. It regulates the release of a chemical called dopamine in the brain and kills all the good feelings that you can relate back to smoking. The trick is to start taking Champix a week before you set your quit date. So a couple of days after you stop smoking, you may find it easy to overcome the withdrawal symptoms.

After 3 days

The withdrawal symptoms may continue to increase and you may have to put up a fight with your mind and ego to justify the decision you took 3 days back. Having said that, you will be able to taste your favourite delicacies better and get relief from bad breath.

After 4 days

More health benefits will come your way 4 days after you quit smoking. Your throat and lungs will start getting cleared from nicotine tars. Your body too will start getting detoxified, giving you a happy and healthy feeling. But you may still have to continue fighting with physical withdrawal symptoms such as constipation, headache and general discomfort.

After 2 weeks

Now is the time to say that you have reached a stage where you do not have any physical reasons to start smoking again. Your energy level will rise drastically - you can take the stairs instead of lift without grasping for breath; you will be able to perform hard physical labour and your immunity will increase.

After months

If you can stay tobacco-free for 3-6 months, your cravings for nicotine will slowly subside. Even an odd temptation to smoke at the office party or in a friend's place won't make you feel that you are dependent on nicotine.

First smoking cessation anniversary

A year after you quit smoking, the risk of coronary heart disease will reduce considerably. Plenty of other benefits will also be there for you to appreciate and enjoy.

Although many smokers might think that the damage is already present or that it is too late to bother, scientific studies show us otherwise. Studies say that the benefits are immediate, while being long lasting in results.

Do you know that in just the first hour after you stop smoking your pulse rate and blood pressure decrease, while the internal temperature of your hands and feet will increase? Smoking on the other hand constricts blood vessels, while raising the heart rate, because of the compounds produced within the body. Once you flush these toxins from the body, it will return to its normal state of being.

Within just a few hours, the levels of carbon monoxide in the blood will return to normal. Smoking exposes you to CO, which binds with hemoglobin - the molecule that helps transport oxygen through the blood stream. However, this will reduce the amount of oxygen available. The CO levels will decrease, which will increase the available oxygen, while encouraging it to do its job properly, but feeding all the tissues, which work to sustain your life.

The risk of a heart attack will be on a downswing after the first 24 hours. Your nerve endings change, 48 hours after you stop smoking, since the stimulation induced by soaking them in nicotine reduces drastically. You begin to recover your natural sensations, while at the same time, your sense of smell and taste begins its recovery. You sense of smell is much sharper, while you notice that food tastes fresher than it has in a long while.

Within a couple of weeks, the craving for nicotine tapers off, only to return, if at all at random times over the following months. The circulatory system begins to recover, while gradually the ability to exercise without a shortness of breath or wheezing occurs. You will be able to once again exercise normally within the next few weeks and months, as you commence with a regular exercise routine.

The sinus congestion and hacking cough, common among smokers begins to decrease considerably over the next few months. Your overall energy level increases, while smoke induced fatigue begins to drop as your body systems regenerate to a peak level of functioning.

The risk of stroke drops suddenly, while you keep to your long-term commitment to stop smoking. Do you know that the risk doubles for smokers in comparison to non-smokers? Within a year, it drops by half. Within five to fifteen years, the risk drops down to the level of those who have never even picked up a cigarette.

Similar risks of larynx or lung cancer, pancreas, bladder and others will drop to that of a lifelong non-smoker. Studies show that 87% of lung cancers are those who are a long-term heavy smoker. When you stop smoking, you remove yourself from that group within a few short years.

Stopping smoking is a permanent commitment to long-term health. Its alternative leads to an increased risk of stroke, coronary disease, various cancers, COPD and other acute medical complications. You can beat the odds, when you stop smoking now!
