Is hypnosis a viable method in treating smoking addiction or is it just a big scam?
Those with addictions, phobias or similar problems are turning to hypnosis to cure their ailments. But there are many sceptics out there that believe it is all a big con.
So does hypnotherapy work? Can you really stop smoking with hypnosis?
Many claims have been made in regards to hypnosis, from doctors and patients alike. Apparently curing all manner of things:
- Weight Loss
- Stopping Smoking
- Memory Recovery
- Sleeping Problems
- Phobias
- Stress and Anxiety
- Pain Management
- Mental health
Results vary across the board for the different purposes of hypnotherapy. However there can be promising results when people try stop smoking with hypnosis. Research has shown that using hypnosis to stop smoking can be very effective for smoking cessation, with a success rate of about 66%.
In comparison behaviour therapy show results of 25%. Using nicotine replacement products show results of 25%. And quitting without external help shows quitting results of about 5%.
Beware of any person or product that offers a 99% success rate as this just is not possible.
Looking at the results hypnotherapy can be a very valuable tool in quitting smoking successfully however there are a couple downsides - cost being one of them. Therapists often charge between $150 and $850 per session - which for some is simply too far out of reach. Especially to those who are partly quitting smoking to better their financial situation. Another negative is that for some people to stop smoking with hypnosis it is simply not possible, hypnotherapy seems to be one of those techniques that will either work perfectly for you - or it won't work at all.
Hypnosis can have benefits, however, how successfully a person can quit smoking will mostly depend on that persons state-of-mind and where they are within their own quit smoking journey and can't be won over by some "magical product or service".
My suggestion - put that money you would use on a hypnotherapist towards a REAL therapist, you may just kill two birds with one stone.
