Of course you want to stop smoking. You want to quit smoking more than anything else, and you should! But, you just don't know where to turn! If you're like most, you may have tried patches, gum, Chantix, Zyban and/or hypnosis only to find yourself right back in the clutches of nicotine addiction! You know that your behavior is unhealthy, but you're afraid to give up your crutch because if you do your emotional distress will worsen, and you just don't know if you can cope without it! You know that it's unhealthy to smoke, but you just can't seem to stop! Unfortunately, smoking cessation programs not only fail to address the root cause of nicotine addiction, but they also fail in excess of ninety percent of the time! But, I'm here to tell you that there is a better solution for overcoming your nicotine addiction; one that doesn't include patches, gum, hypnosis, psychoactive drugs or nonsense!



WHY YOU SMOKE



As with every type of habitual behavior, I believe smoking is a choice. I also believe that this choice can be broken down into the following two categories:



1. Individuals who occasionally enjoy a cigar or cigarette socially
2. Individuals that smoke to alleviate their emotional distress and anxiety



Although there is health risks to consider when smoking, individuals that fall respectively into the first category are generally capable of walking away from it without any difficulty whatsoever. Comparatively speaking, this parallels individuals who drink occasionally and or socially. The second category represents individuals who have become dependent on smoking to alleviate there emotional distress and anxiety, whereby making it extremely difficult to achieve smoking cessation, unless they remove the root cause. I am vehemently opposed to labeling anyone since I believe that we are all created equal, but for the purpose of greater understanding these people would fall into the medical community's definition of a nicotine addict. As we discussed earlier, most physicians, therapist, hypnotists, counselors and smoking cessation experts would have you believe that smoking is caused by a chemical co-dependence and/or that it is a learned behavior. Well, I have a different take on those theories, and I have proven over and over again in my Addiction Recovery Coaching practice that the root cause of addiction is the need to mask emotional distress.



These emotional issues are often rooted in the negative patterns of family dysfunction, and smoking is no exception to the rule. Although when it comes to a smoking addiction, the primary type of emotional distress involved is anxiety. In many ways, smoking is used as a coping mechanism for those of us that are nervous, fearful, or anxious about our family, job, relationship, or financial well being. This frantic effort to control life often leads to smoking or a nicotine addiction. In essence, smoking is a crutch! But, why do some people react to the unknown with anxiety while others face it calmly with the belief that things always works out? I believe the answer to this question is twofold. First, some people naturally possess a higher level of coping skills, and second, some people have learned to conquer their fears, insecurities and most important their anxieties!



THE PSYCHOACTIVE EFFECTS OF NICOTINE



As nicotine enters the body, it is distributed quickly through the blood stream and can cross the blood brain barrier in approximately seven seconds. The life of nicotine in the body is around two hours. The amount of nicotine absorbed by the body from smoking depends on many factors, including the type of tobacco, whether the smoke is inhaled, and whether a filter is used. Nicotine's mood-altering effects vary by report. Initially, it causes a release of glucose from the liver and adrenaline from the adrenal gland, which produces a stimulating effect. However, users report feelings of relaxation, sharpness, calmness, and even alertness. When a cigarette is smoked, nicotine-rich blood passes from the lungs to the brain within seven seconds and immediately stimulates the release of many chemical messengers such as epinephrine (adrenaline) and dopamine a neurotransmitter, which results in enhanced pleasure, decreased anxiety, and a state of alert relaxation. However, as the body adapts it requires increased amounts of nicotine to produce the same effect, whereby creating a trap!



WITHDRAWAL



Many of the proponents of the chemical dependence model believe that when you stop smoking, your body reacts very quickly to the lack of nicotine in your system. They claim that over the course of three to five days, you are likely to experience a number of the following physical symptoms as the toxins are flushed from your body:



o Increased irritability, frustration, or anger
o Anxiety, tension or nervousness
o Restlessness
o Difficulty concentrating
o Fatigue
o Headaches
o Trouble sleeping
o Increased appetite and weight gain



However, I have seen no empirical evidence to conclusively prove that most people experience the above-mentioned symptoms because of the lack of nicotine. I believe that most of these symptoms exist prior to smoking. Therefore, once you stop smoking the anxiety, restlessness, lack of focus, fatigue, and sleeplessness resurface. The nicotine was merely a masking agent! In essence, smoking is a means by which to alleviate ones anxiety and emotional distress. Think about it for a moment, and ask yourself the following questions:



o When you smoke does it calm your nerves and relieve your anxiety?
o Do you find it difficult to manage your anxiety without the crutch of smoking?
o What has caused your anxiety? What dysfunctional patterns have you learned in the past that have damaged your self- esteem, confidence, or willingness to trust?
o Do you find it difficult to avoid worry and to trust the flow of life?
o Are you fearful about negative outcomes concerning your relationship, job, or financial situation?



Once you explore these questions, you may begin to discover the vehicle that is driving your smoking addiction!



Overcoming your nicotine addiction is really all about removing the source of your emotional distress, isn't it? If you could remove the anxiety, nervousness, and emotional distress you wouldn't need to alleviate it with the psychoactive substance called (nicotine?) Smoking is a symptom of underlying emotional distress and anxiety. Therefore, when you fix the root of the problem smoking becomes repulsive.

When you decide to quit smoking pot, there are a number of things you may want to consider ahead of time, so that your not thrown off guard when they come up. It is important to realize that for many people, the second most frequent time for a relapse is in the first three months after quitting pot. Typically it can happen when situational triggers such as a stressful event occurs. It is in situations like this when people reach for the weed automatically, simply because they have developed a strong association to smoking marijuana and relaxing. This type of situation is very common for the simple reason that it is quite difficult to prepare ones self until it happens, so it becomes increasingly important to recognize it if it is to happen to you. By far, the most popular drug in America is weed. More people use marijuana than any other narcotic. Unlike other "harder" drugs, marijuana has never been given their evil status. However, many people are having a hard time figuring out how to quit smoking pot. The truth is though, there are many great reasons to stop smoking weed.

Stop smoking without using drugs or turning to food by using these simple methods.



Short of locking yourself in a room by yourself for a month or entering into a voluntary coma, how can you quit smoking - without using drugs, eating yourself silly or alienating your friends and family? While it's never easy (but definitely worth it), there are things you can do to make the journey a little easier.



Make up Your Mind
One of the best ways to quit smoking is to make up your mind to do it. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if you're doing it half-heartedly or doing it for someone else, your chances for success go down. Only you know when the time is right.



Talk it Up...Or Not
For some people, telling others about your plans to quit makes it more real. Then again, some people like to keep in quiet in case they don't succeed. That's a choice that you'll have to make for yourself. The upside to telling people you're trying to quit is that they'll probably be a little more sympathetic if you blow up at them for no good reason (other than you're missing your nicotine). And chances are, they'll do what they can to distract you.



Exercise
When the urge to smoke becomes overwhelming, go for a walk. Or if you can't go for a walk, do some squats or lunges. The craving will pass and your gluteus maximus will thank you. Any kind of exercise will increase the levels of dopamine and other feel-good brain chemicals that are similar to the ones you get from smoking. Who knows - maybe you'll get addicted to exercise instead.



Chew Gum
For some people, smoking is a very oral thing. If you're one of those people, try chewing sugarless gum instead. Not only will it get you through a rough spot, it will also help your concentration - so use it to concentrate on something besides smoking.



Start Drinking
Drinking a big glass of water helps dull nicotine cravings. So do yourself a favor - drink up! A few (or a lot) of extra bathroom trips are worth it. Plus, water is good for your skin, controlling food cravings and improving concentration.



Change it Up
Some people associate smoking with doing certain activities. If you like to smoke when you are drinking alcohol, start having your adult beverages someplace where you can't smoke - or even give up alcohol temporarily. If you smoke while you're driving, try wearing gloves (yes, it might look odd on a 90 degree day, but who cares) or even take the bus or carpool with a non-smoker. If you smoke to relax, try reading or meditation.



If you've made up your mind to quit smoking, you can do it, and you can do it without turning to drugs or food. Just implement some or all of the tips above to make your transition to non-smoking more bearable.

So, you've gotten to the point where you are serious about kicking the smoking habit but you don't really want to use drugs or other medications. The good news is that you can quit smoking without drugs or medication. In fact using this method may even make you learn to hate the smell and taste of cigarettes.



This approach is radical and I'm sure it wouldn't be recommended by many health care professionals. But come to think of it, smoking is not recommended by health care professionals either.



This is quite an extreme method so you probably shouldn't use it for more than two or three days in a row. Once you have done it though, chances are that you might quit for good right then and there. If down the road you do start smoking again, just repeat the process again to get back on track.



Here's how to do it.



Try to choose a time when you will be able to smoke any time, night or day. A good time might be the weekend or whenever you get time off from work. If you work at home or are a stay-at-home mom try to have someone else available to help with childcare if you can.



Step one starts the minute you get up. Before you do anything else, light up a cigarette and then smoke the whole thing as quickly as possible before doing anything else. Don't stop to brush your teeth or shower. Head right to the kitchen, light a second cigarette and again smoke this one as quickly as possible.



Then make yourself a cup of your usual morning beverage. Before taking even a sip, once again and as quickly as you can, smoke another cigarette. Have your coffee, tea, or juice and another cigarette.



You are going to repeat this process of only doing one small thing followed up by smoking a cigarette in a quick, unpleasant way before you let yourself do anything else. Your goal will be to smoke as many cigarettes as possible and experience the frustration of how long it takes to get even the smallest of tasks finished.



By smoking each cigarette as rapidly as you can, you are taking away the pleasure of leisurely puffing and relaxing. Instead you want each cigarette to be as hot and unpleasant as possible. Avoid taking a break between puffs or putting the cigarette down at all. Smoke each cigarette way faster than you normally would.



Make yourself smoke way more than you usually would. Really concentrate on smoking. Notice how bad your mouth tastes after awhile, and how your fingers reek of smoke. Mostly though, notice how much you are not enjoying smoking. Keep this up until bedtime.



With any luck you will wake up with at least a slight headache and a queasy stomach, your chest will feel heavy, and you may find yourself coughing a lot. Don't let that stop you. In fact, you are going to do it all again the second day. This extreme method is a good way to quit smoking without drugs. If you can make yourself stick to it for a weekend or two, you may even learn to hate the smell and taste of cigarettes.

Boy I know that drill, having kicked the habit myself just this year. The "My Time to Quit" campaign by the makers of the anti-smoking drug Chantix, urges people to find their time to quit.



Chantix (varenicline) does work better than other drugs that are out there, include Zyban (buproprion) at helping people quit smoking and stay off of cigarettes. But it can have some nasty side effects.



Chantix affects the frontal lobe of the brain, which regulates emotion, and has been associated with depression, psychosis, and suicidality. It made headlines when a famous country music singer from Texas who was on the drug accosted a neighbor in an apparently psychotic state of mind and was shot dead. Chantix can also make you have freaky dreams and have trouble falling asleep.



What's really annoying is that the clinical trials of Chantix excluded people with mental disorders, but smoking is increased in this population, and these people are obviously at increased risk of suicidality. The herb St. Johns Wort is a component in Quit Tea because of its properties as an anti-depressant and in helping reduce some of negative effects of nicotine withdrawal. St. Johns Wort has many pharmacological properties of an anti-depressants. One compound found in St. Johns Wort is hyperforin, which is most likely responsible for the anti-depressant effects. The hyperforin acts as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) like many anti-depressants. It is levels of serotonin in the brain are low, due to being absorbed too readily, that medical professionals have determined to cause depression.



The Cochorane Collaboration conducted a major review of St. Johns Wort that included over five thousand patients being treated for depression. A results from the Cochrane Collaboration study states. "the available evidence suggests that the hypericum extracts tested in the included trials a) are superior to placebo in patients with major depression; b) are similarly effective as standard antidepressants; and c) have fewer side effects than standard antidepressants."



If you would like to use anti-depressants to help you quit smoking, St. Johns Wort is an option that might work just as well for you as pharmaceutical anti-depressants without the side-effects.
