The most effective stop smoking aids are those used in nicotine substitution therapy. This is because nicotine is the substance that makes smoking addictive. When choosing a nicotine replacement, make sure that the product you opt for is FDA-approved. This way, you can be certain that you are not placing your health in danger with a product that is not safe. Following is a list of products used in the tried and tested nicotine replacement treatment and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Lozenges
As with most stop smoking aids, nicotine-containing lozenges can be bought without a prescription. This does not mean, though, that you can just pop them in your mouth whenever you feel like it. Nicotine lozenges have been proven to be most effective when taken in set amounts for a period of 12 weeks. After this period, it is expected that you have successfully conquered your habit of smoking; otherwise, it is advised that you talk to your physician and ask for another treatment.

Nasal Sprays
Nicotine nasal sprays are not over-the-counter medication. This is because given the fact that these nasal sprays contain the said substance, they may cause the addiction to persist instead of eliminate it. Owing to their form, nicotine-containing nasal sprays deliver results - that is, eliminate symptoms of nicotine withdrawal - the fastest. This is due to the fact that once sprayed in the nose, the substances contained in the spray reach the bloodstream immediately.

Patches
Nicotine patches are one of the more popular nicotine substitutes available in the market. Doctors recommend that these be used for approximately 4 months to achieve optimum results. Patches of this kind are not different from other patch medications in that they introduce a predetermined amount of nicotine via the skin.

Gums
Chewing gums containing nicotine are also effective as substance replacements. These can be bought without a prescription, and can be used as needed. It is important to remember, however, that as with any other stop smoking aids, following a schedule will yield faster results compared to just chewing a gum whenever you feel the urge to smoke.
