There are many ways to stop smoking and each individual needs to find their own way, but to help you find your way, here is a list of the most common methods.

Nicotine Replacement

Nicotine replacement can be in the form of patches, inhalers or gum. The idea is to avoid any physical withdrawal symptoms by continuing to ingest nicotine into your system instead of actually smoking. That way you can get used to not smoking before you have to face actual physical withdrawals.

Anti Craving Drugs

Over the years drugs companies have come up with various anti craving drugs to help people stop smoking. These drugs often have side effects that can be quiet severe but it depends on the individual.

Counselling

Having counselling before and during stopping helps people understand and let go f the underlying reasons why they are smoking. This can help people stay stopped long term without suffering panic attacks and cravings, or help people with techniques to deal with any panic attacks or cravings as they arise.

Books and Tapes

Books and tapes look at the reasons why people smoke so that they can work through and break free from the underlying motivations. This can be done before and/or during stopping. Again, the advantages are long term ease and freedom from cravings. This is essentially a form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), though the writers themselves may not identify it as such.

Hypnotism

There are numerous methods used in hypnotism, one example being that a cigarette tastes really foul and/or will make you ill if you try to smoke one. Hypnotism tries to trick your mind into believing that a cigarette will be uncomfortable or harmful in some way. Different hypnotism techniques may involve making someone believe they are a non smoker, or they are free from all craving etc.

A Mixture

People often use a mixture of two or more of the above methods, for example someone may get hypnotised, take anti-craving drugs, get counselling and work through a book and/or tape.

Find Your Way

However you choose to stop smoking if the way you have chosen hasn't worked for you then move on to the next method. It is often the case that some people need to try a number of different methods until they eventually find the right one. In fact, it is often the case that only a number of failed attempts using different methods will enable a person to eventually quit.
