When most people try to quit smoking, they usually try all the popular products which include Nicorette patches and gum. For many people these type of products work perfectly. However many times it's not enough. Sometimes people need help coping with the withdrawal symptoms of smoking. Recently people have turned to antidepressants for help. Prozac is one such medication that has been used to help people quit smoking.

Prozac can either be used in conjunction with nicotine patches or gum. However many people choose to use it when trying to quit "cold turkey". This is because the withdrawal symptoms tend to be worse when you stop all at once.

Like all antidepressants, Prozac works by tricking your brain into being "happy". This is done by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin helps control messages that the brain sends to the rest of the body, like the feelings of being tired, hungry or depressed.

Like all medications there are some severe side effects that should be taken into account.

*Although it seems odd, 30% of all people who use it report an increase of their depression. It usually occurs in the first few weeks of taking the drug or when the dose is dramatically changed.

*People report having a decreased appetite. While this may seem like a good way to lose weight, rapid weight loss is not healthy.

*In many cases it simply doesn't work.

All things considered, while Prozac can be an effective way to help people quit smoking, it should be used as a last resort, after the more traditional methods have been tried. It's also important to talk to your doctor before taking any antidepressant. He'll be able to best advise you if Prozac is right for you.
