There are many alternatives available today to help stop smoking without using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) This includes a great variety of self help material, counseling and drugs such as Zyban or even Prozac. Quitting smoking is not an easy thing to do and as the great Mark Twain said, I quote "Stopping smoking is easy. I've done it a thousand times." However, back in the days of Mark Twain, he had no idea that he was battling with an addiction to nicotine, but today we now realize that this nicotine dependency has to be dealt with.

And we do not all have the willpower of General De Gaulle who was a heavy smoker. He just realized one day that the cigarettes were controlling him, and not  the other way around, so he just stopped! But we are not all made of the same stuff. Physical, psychological and emotional addictions are very difficult to control and changing the way we do things is also not easy, particularly if we still want to be around others who smoke. You can't all of a sudden stop being friends with smokers because they smoke and you don't want to.

Making use of free government telephone counseling services is a good route to take to quit smoking without using NRT. These services have shown excellent results in the states that operate them and they have seen smokers able to stop twice as fast as others who do not make use of these services.

As nicotine is such a difficult drug to give up, in order to be successful it is not only about the smoker. It is about the kind of support and encouragement they receive from others. This includes counselors, friends, family and the people they work with, all of these people play a role in the support team of someone trying to quit smoking. We often hear ex-smokers say that they would never have been able to quit if it was not for the support they were given.

Any smoker who wants to stop is able to receive all the information they need from local support groups, hospitals, employers, health clubs, and health insurance companies. The best support does however come from trained counselors who specialize in this are of expertise.

You can receive both group and individual counseling or as we said before, simply over the telephone. A counselor will assist the smoker to recognize the emotional and psychological issues that arise when they first stop smoking and withdraw from nicotine. It is not an easy task as the addiction to nicotine is one of the strongest there is.

The thing to remember is that once you stop smoking, the nicotine remains in the body for as long as three to four days and it is when this period is over that the withdrawal symptoms begin to manifest. These are liable to last just a couple of days or in some instances even weeks. It is this time when the support is needed most so that the smoker has someone to turn to rather than back to the cigarettes.

The beauty of using counseling to get over the urge to smoke is that you don't have to use NRT, and you also don't have to use any dangerous drugs. Clinical studies have shown that when a smoker received the correct counseling or attends a specialist clinic, they are four times likelier to succeed in their attempts to stop smoking. Trying to do this completely alone has been found to be the least successful strategy of all.

The most popular aids to stop smoking are nicotine replacement products. Mostly they are the nicotine chewing gum (Nicorette), the nicotine nasal spray, and the nicotine patch (Nicotrol or Nicoderm CQ). What they do is to cause you to release small amounts of nicotine into your system to attend to your cravings.

As you continue to use them, you are gradually weaned off of the harmful substance until you don't need them so much anymore. You can get them over the counter just about everywhere in the United States.

Another way to stop smoking that you may not have considered is alternative medicine. There is considerable controversy regarding how safe and effective these smoking cessation methods are so you may want to do some personal research on your own before you embark upon them.

Few people will deny the fact that hypnotism really does work to help addicts break the habit, but the effect of acupuncture in the same regard is still in question. If at all you do decide to pursue any of these methods, at least see to it that you first consult a practitioner with good repute.

There are a lot of other aids and ways by which you can stop your smoking habit, and you will find them all over the Internet. I will only advice that a little caution never hurt anybody, especially if you are hoping to quit smoking and never relapse into the habit. Go to it. Like I said earlier, a word with your doctor can just be good for you.

There are people who claim that they quit smoking cold turkey, and I believe them; but I think you should also consider a number of other stop smoking strategies that work. This article looks at some of them, with a view to helping you quit the dangerous smoking habit.

Various nicotine replacement products have been known to help a great deal and many Americans on smoking cessation programs are currently using either the nicotine patch or chewing on Nicorette, the nicotine gum. If those are not doing it for you, you could get a physician to write you a prescription for the nicotine spray. These products help you bid the tide of withdrawal from nicotine when the symptoms hit you twenty four to forty eight hours into the program.

There aren't many medical professionals that will not recommend support group therapy to help you break your smoking habit. There is nothing quite like talking to others like yourself and listening to them, drawing strength from each other's failures and successes. It is definitely an improvement on facing the touch climb back to abstemiousness on your own. However, most professionals also prefer to prescribe some form of medication to help you handle the stress you are sure to feel from time to time when you start to crave nicotine.

You should do everything you can to stop smoking today. If you have to merge all of these stop smoking strategies into one, you may as well go ahead with it. Just see that you get the approval of your doctor first. The physician will help you to get the required treatment and medication suitable for you.

We are more aware now than ever that smoking is a serious detriment to your health. It can be damaging to you and to the people around you, thanks to secondhand smoke. There are many ways to quit smoking. However, did you know that it is possible to stop smoking without using nicotine replacement? There are merits to nicotine replacement therapy, also known as NRT. It must be said, though, that there are also benefits to trying some other methods.

It is hard to quit smoking. It ranks right up there with losing weight, in terms of the patience, struggle, and will power it may take to stop. Nicotine is a very addicting drug. It holds on very tight, so to speak.

Let us discuss, first, how nicotine replacement therapy actually works. To put it simply, it is designed to make your body and your mind quit craving cigarettes - or more rather, the nicotine contained within them. Replacement therapy allows tiny amounts of nicotine to enter into your body and bloodstream. Most often a patch is used, but there are nicotine inhalers and other methods used as well, such as nicotine gum.

The problem is with Nicotine Replacement Therapy is that your body is still getting nicotine. You are not doing without it at all. Furthermore, after a span of time, many people take on the mistaken belief that they will be able to control their smoking. They believe that they will still be able to smoke cigarettes, perhaps socially. In no time at all, however, they will be back where they started. So nicotine therapy definitely has its downfalls.

Thus, you may need to take matters into your own hands without relying on nicotine replacement. There are some tips which can help you to do this. Willpower helps, but it is not the only thing you need. First of all, you need to identify a few things - such as why you want to stop smoking; how you intend to prepare; and when you want to stop.

So, first things first: why is it that you want to stop smoking? Every person has a different reason for this. Sometimes it is for their health.  Sometimes it is simply because they do not want to waste their money any longer. Whatever the case may be, knowing why you want to stop smoking is the first step in helping you succeed.

Deciding when you want to quit is hugely important as well. We tend to make bargains with ourselves. You may think to yourself that you will stop once you finish your last pack or your last carton. However, that inevitably leads to one more pack, one more carton, one more cigarette. You need to have a set date, mark it down, and tell people about it.

Next, you need to find a stop smoking program and start making preparations. It is better, for instance, to either throw away or give away the cigarettes you have left rather than keeping them around thinking that you would never touch them. You also need to make changes in your personal routine. If you tend to take a smoke break at a certain time at work or after a meal, plan to find something else to do at that time.

Making a plan to stop smoking is a far better use of your time rather than depending on the 'magic' solution promised by Nicotine Replacement Therapies to help you quit smoking.

If you really want to stop smoking, you can. Thankfully, there are now many solutions and products out there that help to quit the habit. Nicotine replacement is one way to reduce a smoker's craving for nicotine. The nicotine gum is particularly popular and sold in some convenience stores as well. The nicotine patch is even about the most common, and it is available to you just about everywhere you look.

If the above technique for quitting smoking does not work, or even if it does, you may want to try your hands at drugs and medications that help you quit smoking. You don't have to worry too hard about these treatments, although you may not get them without a prescription from a certified health professional.

Mostly they are antidepressants and anticholinergic drugs, the most common of which is bupropin. This drug helps you to manage the withdrawal symptoms of the smoking habit so that you can survive the worst of them without tears. I warn you, if you don't have this kind of fortification, especially if you are really addicted to nicotine, you may not be able to deal with the nausea and the headaches, and the loss of appetite, and the other symptoms that come with nicotine withdrawal.

The most important method of smoking cessation is therapy. Psychotherapy by personal sessions with a psychotherapist and by occasional group therapies can go a long way to relieve you of some of the worst effects of smoking. Because you are addicted to nicotine, you cannot conceivably treat just the physical effects of the dependence without addressing the psychosomatic symptoms of smoking as well. Until you are able to do that quite well, you will not get very lucky trying to stop smoking.

As an ex smoker I can tell you right off the bat that nicotine withdrawal can be tough. The cravings to smoke combined with irritability, crankiness and fatigue can be overwhelming. We all know smoking is harmful to our health and most smokers want to quit. Now, for those committed to quitting there's good news. Nicotine replacement aids can ease the torment of withdrawal symptoms and help beat tobacco addiction!

Everyday newer and improved products to help you stop smoking are hitting the market. First, understand how they work so you can choose the one right for you.

As you smoke, nicotine from your cigarette causes receptors in your brain to release several chemicals, including dopamine, which cause most of the positive feelings you associate with smoking. When you stop smoking, the lower levels of these chemicals cause the often miserable symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

By continuing to stimulate the release of low levels of dopamine and other chemicals in your brain when using a new and improved nicotine replacement product, you will decrease your craving for nicotine and also decrease your other symptoms of withdrawal!

Makes sense, right?

Now that you know how they work, choosing the right aid for you will be the next step. Every smoker's quitting challenge is different. What works for one may not work for another. The aids are available in different forms such as a patch, lozenges, gum, inhaler and sprays. The sprays worked for me because of their convenience but as I said, each smoker is different. The answer to your own personal quest can be as close as a website. If one doesn't work for you, stay focused, motivated and try another.

You've made the first major step by committing to stop smoking. Now equip yourself with an effective nicotine replacement aid and you're on the way to winning the most rewarding challenge of your life. You're going to feel better, look better and be rightfully proud of yourself. I did it and you can too!

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is becoming very popular as more and more people trying to kick the habit. NRT includes products such as nicotine patches, nicotine gum and inhalers. But really work?

When you want to stop smoking you need to cure physical desire for nicotine and you have to break the psychological habit of smoking cigarettes. With NRT products like Nicoderm, the body is supplied daily with small amounts of nicotine. The dose is gradually reduced over a period of time until it went the physical need for cigarettes.

At the same time, the more you go without a cigarette will be more successful in breaking the mental habit as well. The great advantage of NRT than the ' cold turkey ' is that withdrawal symptoms associated with smoking cessation are greatly reduced.

NRT remedies have a reasonably good success rate — about twice that of trying to quit on your own. Why is this? One of the ways to quit smoking is taking fewer cigarettes each day until you reach zero, then stopped, right? Wrong-you already know this since you have probably tried out this way. NRT has the advantage of providing a more structured approach to help you stop. First of all it is impossible to continue to smoke after startup of the program or the ingestion of too much nicotine. So you have to give up the cigarette habit '. Secondly you paid good money for care, then there is some motivation to see.

After the 12 weeks they got through the worst part. However, temptation to reach for a cigarette on the occasion will still be there. At this point could turn to other methods such as support groups (such as nicotine anonymous) or hypnosis to keep you from starting again.

A major criticism that is leveled at NRT is that it is continuing to take the nicotine. It is true that could, for example, continue with nicotine gum instead of smoking cigarettes after supposedly ' exit '. This is a real risk that can be reduced to try one of the alternative methods mentioned above, stop smoking (support groups, hypnosis) as well as NRT.

In the end, though, it's safe to say that NRT methods work and offer the smoker is one of the best ways to quit smoking than going alone. You still need motivation though, because the products NRT alone may not be sufficient.
