You could be using hypnosis, cognitive behavioural therapy or just about any method to stop smoking, no matter what, you can benefit from these 3 powerful tips on stopping smoking.

Tips #1 on stopping smoking

Take a piece of paper, and on one side, write down at least 10 reasons you wish to become a non-smoker. E.g.: it smells, its expensive, I am slowly killing myself... And on the other side of that paper, write at least 10 benefits you will gain from quitting. Keep that paper handy, and look at it whenever you feel like taking another puff.

Tips #2 on stopping smoking

Sit down in a quiet place, and think ahead. When you think one year ahead, think about what happens in your life if you keep going, and smoking and puffing away. Then 3 years, and 5, and 10 years ahead, how is your life going to be if you are honest with yourself? Try to really feel the disgust about the smells, the gigantic mounts of cigarette buds you have left behind, and really try to feel sick inside at the thought.

Then get up, take a short break, and get away from those negative feelings.

Sit back down, and do the same exercise, but now start looking at all the wonderful things that will come off you being a non-smoker. 1 year ahead, 3 years, 5 or even 10 years, imagine how much better you will feel about yourself, how much better you will smell. Just try to imagine the feeling of success, that you will get from accomplishing to quit smoking. Embrace all those great feelings, and take them with you, when you quit smoking.

Tips #3 on stopping smoking

Get social support, and commit yourself even deeper to quit smoking.
When you decide to quit smoking, you can make that decision even more powerful by letting your friends and family know about it in advance of you quitting. Make sure you talk a lot about you quitting, and let everyone know that you may need there help and support to stay a non-smoker.

Don't underestimate the power of support, just look at the Tour de France, and how the yellow jersey sometimes make the rider wearing it, perform way above his normal standards. And the "fear" of having to tell all your friends and family that you failed in quitting, could also be a great motivating factor.

If you've just stopped smoking or are getting ready to stop, you're probably wondering how you're going to feel after stopping smoking. What physical changes can you expect? Will you be climbing the walls? When will you start to feel like you've really really stopped? You will go through some changes and it helps to know what to expect so you can deal with it when it happens.

Immediately after you quit, actually within 20 minutes, your body starts to heal itself. Your pulse will lower, your blood pressure will drop a little bit and your circulation will increase. Ever notice that you have really cold hands and feet in the winter? Its because smoking decreases your circulation.

Nicotine withdrawal typically begins 4 hours after your last cigarette and will peak in the first 24 to 48 hours. The severity will depend on if you're using nicotine replacement or a stop smoking pill or another stop smoking aid. Some of the effects you might feel are lightheadedness, dry mouth, insomnia, inability to concentrate, headache, cough.

These symptoms will be the worst in the first couple of days and then begin to taper off. Most people make it over this first hurdle because they have their commitment to quit smoking fresh in their mind.

The nicotine withdrawal symptoms should be gone within 3 weeks. You will still mentally crave a cigarette and unfortunately this is when many people relapse and light up to have "just one". Smoking that one cigarette will send you back to the beginning. One puff or one pack you'll have to go through the nicotine withdrawal all over again.

It will take 6 to 8 weeks before you start to feel like a nonsmoker. It takes time to establish new habits and that's what you're doing, starting a new habit of not smoking. Think of it as replacing one habit with the other.

As to feeling as if you've really really quit? It depends on the person. I quit once for over a year and then went back when I was in a very stressful situation. Now I've been smoke free for nearly 4 years. It probably took me about 6 months this time to really feel like a nonsmoker and know that I wasn't going back.

What you're going to experience after stopping smoking is going to vary from person to person depending on what smoking cessation therapy you're using, how you cope with stress, how your body reacts, etc. I can't give you a carved in stone example of how you're going to feel, but these are some general guidelines of what you can expect to feel after quitting cigarettes.

Nicotine Replacement Patches? Gum? Pills? There are many stop smoking "products" on the market that you can choose. So why should you consider hypnosis?

1) Hypnosis is a "process", not a "product"

Hypnosis permanently changes your attitude towards smoking. Its power comes from your desire to become a non-smoker. Hypnosis literally "switches off" any thoughts of smoking.

Patches and Gum do the opposite - by using these products you are subconsciously saying "There is something that I need in a cigarette, therefore I need to substitute the cigarette with something else." You may replace one habit with another.

2) Hypnosis is Healthy and Safe

You’re trying to rid your body of toxins ... so why would you replace the nicotine in cigarettes with the nicotine in gum or in patches? Nicotine is a poison?

3) Hypnosis is Fast and Easy

Using Hypnosis you can be a non-smoker in one hour or less. Patches and Gum often require weeks or months of treatmene

4) Hypnosis is Permanent

Because Hypnosis permanently changes your attitude towards smoking you have very little chance of relapse at any point in the future. You become a non-smoker.

With other products this mental change has not taken place and therefore you are at best an "ex smoker" continually having to consciously fend off and fight the urge to smoke. Making a relapse more likely.

When the shift to becoming a non-smoker takes place with Hypnosis one no longer has to battle against cigarettes. They will simply fade away as an "enemy".

5) Hypnosis may be Tax Deductible. Patches and Gum are not.

If you are US taxpayer, you can deduct the cost of smoking cessation programs from your taxes.

From the IRS website ([http://www.irs.gov/faqs/faq-kw139.html])

Are expenses for smoking cessation programs deductible?

You can include in medical expenses amounts you pay for a program to stop smoking. Unreimbursed amounts you pay for participation in a smoking cessation program and for prescribed drugs designed to alleviate nicotine withdrawal are expenses for medical care that are deductible subject to the 7.5% of adjusted gross income limitation if you itemize deductions on Form 1040, Schedule A (PDF), Itemized Deductions.

However, you cannot include in medical expenses amounts you pay for drugs that are designed to help stop smoking that do not require a prescription, such as nicotine gum or patches.

6) Hypnosis is more effective than Patches or Gum

Hypnosis has a 70-80% success rate for those committed to becoming a non smoker. Because the burdens on the patch or gum user are so great, those manufacturers can only boast a 50-60% success rate.

Furthermore most reputable hypnotherapists will offer a guarantee (see http://www.freshstartmethod.com/guarantee.php )of effectiveness stating that if you do not become a non smoker, you do not pay.

And thats not something you'll see on a box of nicotine replacement products!

Deciding to quit smoking is always easier said than done. While your logical mind tells you that a lifestyle change is both beneficial and necessary, your pleasure-oriented subconscious would stubbornly dictate you to go on with your blithe smoking ways. It's always a struggle between wanting to stop and wanting a delightfully toxin-filled puff.

Some would say "once a smoker, always a smoker". This may not be true to all but the adage is certainly understandable as most nicotine addicts just could not stop smoking no matter how badly they wanted to. They could be smoke-free for a period time, but once temptations and peer pressures start to creep in they would resort back to their old habit. What could be worse is that they often do smoking more than they did before quitting.

It would seem to appear that a smoker who wishes to quit smoking is a hopeless case. If you are this person, you may very well be thinking that you're already doomed! Not really. You can actually stop smoking with hypnosis. The subconscious mind, which is the main scoundrel of a successful withdrawal, can be tamed to serve your purpose. With hypnosis, you will no longer need to face the constant struggle between your health and a cigarette.

Of course, the quitting process won't be bump-free ride. In the first day or so your craving for nicotine would still take its toll, but afterward, the craving will just be in your mind. And that is, basically, where hypnosis can do its wonders on you. To quit smoking is to learn a new way of life with new associations.

Hypnosis can aid you in learning this new lifestyle pattern faster; giving you the needed push to pursue a smoke-free life. Instead of having the impression that smoking is a friend, hypnosis will train your mind to consider it a menace, disgust... a disease. In the process, you not only change the way you think, but also change the way you act. In some respect, it is a case of changing the mindset to break the bad habit.

By acquiring the services of a professional hypnotherapist, reinforced with self-hypnosis, one can be victorious in the struggle with cigarettes. It is important to take into account though that despite success stories of former smokers, it is never too unlikely for some people to resort to their old ways and re-emerge as a smoker once again.

This usually happens after a few months, maybe a year, of stopping cigarette smoking. For this reason, it is vital to maintain or engage in periodic meetings with the therapist whenever necessary. Better yet, one may do self-hypnosis every once in a while so as to sustain the process of quitting. It's like recharging batteries once they run low or get empty.

Stop smoking with hypnosis and relieve yourself from the stress of quitting or withdrawal. Hypnosis by a professional, as well as, self-hypnosis can equip you with better coping mechanisms; thus trying to be smoke-free need not be burdensome and difficult to handle. With hypnosis on one's side, the battle with cigarettes can be won with ease.

Many people try all sorts of stop smoking aids when they make the decision to quit. One of the oldest stop smoking aids around is nicotine gum. Now this isn't the kind of gum you used to chew when you were a kid. In fact, this can be described as gum in name only, because it's really not meant to be chewed like the old kid favorite, "Big League Chew".

So what is nicotine gum? Well, as I said, it is one of the most popular and oldest over the counter quit smoking aids on the market. It comes without a prescription in two strengths - 2 and 4 mg's. The higher doses are meant for those who would be characterized as heavy smokers.

Nicotine gum falls in the category of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). The idea of NRT is to help the prospective quitter handle the withdrawal cravings associated with smoking cessation. Because nicotine is addictive, many find a nicotine supplement beneficial. The withdrawal cravings include restlessness, agitation, and basically just not feeling comfortable in your own skin. The cravings peak after 2-3 days and are often what eventually undermines the smoker's attempt to quit successfully.

The idea of the nicotine gum is thought to be two-fold. Not only does it provide a nicotine replacement delivery system, but it also keeps the mouth busy. Remember, smoking is not only addictive but it is a conditioned behavior. The oral satisfaction associated with smoking can be mimicked by various quit methods and nicotine gum is one of them which could potentially address this behavior.

But be careful, because nicotine gum is not meant to be constantly chewed, like recreational gums. Instead, this type of gum is meant to be chewed only until a tingling sensation is noticed. Then it is supposed to be, what they call, "parked" between the gum and cheek until the sensation is no longer felt. Once this occurs, the user repeats the chewing and parking to maintain the tingling feeling.

Side-effects generally occur when people constantly chew the gum without parking it. Constant chewing creates increased salivation and swallowing. This reduces the oral nicotine uptake and increases the likelihood of gastric or GI upset. It also reduces the benefits of the product, since the nicotine then passes out of the body without being absorbed.

Nicotine lozenges work in the same way as the nicotine gum. Since it does not need to be chewed, it may be easier for people to use. Much like the gum, the nicotine is absorbed in the mouth and should not be swallowed. Both can be used in combination with other stop smoking aids, but only under the direction of a doctor.

All the nicotine replacement therapies, including the gum and lozenges can double your chances of success over quitting cold turkey. If you seek the advice of a physician and map out your quit smoking plan, then you also increase your chances of quitting successfully. So although, the gum and lozenge doesn't require a prescription, you may still benefit from a quick trip to the doctor before you start.

Stopping smoking is a difficult task, one made even more difficult by the stubbornness of the smoker as well as by the myths that they keep bringing up. It is amusing that people hide behind these myths like a shield. There are a number of myths that you should understand. When you are finally ready to stop smoking you will also be ready to stop hiding behind these myths as well.

Stop Smoking Myth Number One: I will Automatically Gain Weight

For many people, the easiest myth to hide behind is the fear of weight gain. They mention, and quite rightly so, that being overweight is every bit as dangerous as smoking is, but one does not necessarily mean the other. You don't automatically gain weight because you have stopped smoking. Smoking is a dangerous, addictive habit that you have to deal with. Overeating can also be a dangerous and addictive habit that you should also deal with. You can stop smoking without gaining weight as long as you understand that you may possibly be eating because the food just tastes so much better now. You may be eating to take the place of the activity that you use to do during that time. Instead of reaching for a fattening food like a candy bar or a bag of chips, eat a sugar free Popsicle, a piece of hard candy or even a stick of gum especially during the times when you would ordinarily be lighting up.

You can also brush your teeth which will keep you from wanting to smoke or eat in most cases.

Stop Smoking Myth Number Two: I Will Have to Use Medication

For many people, smoking is more than just a habit, it is an addiction. For those people, there are several medications that can be used to help them deal with the addictive feelings and the cravings as well as the feelings of withdrawals. They may also need to have meds for the psychological boost that they give. For others, medications are not at all necessary and may actually be detrimental to the overall goal of quitting smoking.

Not all addicts have to use medications to deal with their drug of choice. Alcoholics often face their addiction without any kind of pharmaceutical help at all as do many drug addicts. What it will take for you to stop smoking will depend on you and you alone.

Stop Smoking Myth Number Three: Withdrawals Will Kill Me

Anyone who has ever faced withdrawals knows how horrible they are- how painful and physical they can be. After a botched attempt at smoking cessation, many people will never want to go back to those feelings- they want to avoid the feelings of withdrawals that they are convinced will literally kill them. You will make it through those horrible feelings. You will be okay and at the end you will have succeeded in quitting smoking. You will have faced and beaten your addictions.

Every smoker will tell you how hard it is to quit. Some say it is the most difficult to conquer addiction, some doctors say its even harder to quit then heroin. The reason why its so hard, is manly because of substances found in cigarettes such as nicotine and cigarette companies of chemical additives such as place to keep people hooked.

But it is also difficult because of the nature of the smoking habit. Needing a smoke for every occasion. The smoke with your morning coffee, smoking of workunits, the smoke breaks at work, smoking after every meal, smoke when your stress, smoke when the happy, smoke when talking to someone etc.

Is still somewhat accepted in our society (though less and less accepted more recently). So quit smoking can be extremely difficult. Now we know that smoking can cause harm, and the long-term effects are severe and deadly.

So the motivation is concerned is the result of years of smoking. There is absolutely no benefit to smoking. It is expensive and is guaranteed to leave you breathless, with a long and painful journey of regret. So how do you get out?

Quit smoking products can help

Some people have had success using the patch or nicotine gum, for example nicorettes. We recommend that you talk to your doctor to find the medication that is best suited for you, as well as combine counselling or group therapy with this approach.

Advice and/or support groups

You can ask help from professionals and consultants or join a support group like AA. Support groups have had huge success for addicts.

Cold Turkey

Although this may seem like the most difficult, also has a high success rate for those who can sustain for long periods of time.

Whichever way you choose, you may need to try quiting smoking a number of times before you feel you no longer desire and on a daily basis.

Additional tips that may be useful:

1. make a plan-Write what you think are the harmful effects of smoking, also write what you feel will benefit or gain from quiting. Make a plan to quit for good. Take a day to stop and prepare to replace smoking with healthier choices as an exercise and healthy snacks. Knowing what triggers smoke and try to change the pattern.

For example, if you smoke with your morning coffee, change at tea, if you smoke at work breaks, eating fruit instead, if you smoke in the pub with friends, avoid that situation for a while.

2. do not carry smoke or smoking tools-they don't carry matches, lighters or cigarettes with you. Everything that contributes to trigger the need for a cigarette, they must be thrown aside. You need all the help you can get to start triggering new habits and discarding the ugly, deadly smoking habit.

3. start exercising more-replace the old smoking habit out of boredom and dazing into space, with activities and fun. Basically, you need to start a new life. But a more adventurous and fun. Join doing yoga, run a sport star, start living and enjoy every fresh breath.

4. Recruit a friend-find a family member or friend who wants to help or want to quit smoking as well. You'll need someone who is near you for your new lifestyle to encourage and support time can be difficult.

Although millions of people smoke, have also stopped by millions of people. It can be done. Ask your doctor before you begin your journey toward a healthier life for further assistance.
