Pick a method you know you can stick to, and one that you are enthusiastic about.

Can You Afford It?

When you stop smoking, your cigarette and medical expenses are supposed to go down. If the therapy costs so much that you have to sell your soul just to pay it off though, you may have been better off smoking. Quitting smoking doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg, so make sure you're able to afford the method you've chosen.

Does It Work?

Check out the success rate of other people who have used the method before you. You also need to look out for potentially negative side effects. It doesn't help if you quit smoking successfully but your eyes pop out of your head.

Now you know what to look out for when deciding between stopping smoking programs. Picking the right program is really half the battle. Have you found the best program for quitting smoking yet?

Have you tried to quit smoking without any success? Have you tried several methods only to end up smoking once again? Check out these quit smoking tips to help you stop smoking once and for all.

Tip #1: Replacing Your Habit

If you've been smoking for long enough, you not only become addicted to the nicotine in cigarettes, but you start forming a smoking habit. As the saying goes, old habits die hard, and smoking habits die even harder.

You've probably heard of nicotine replacement therapy, which involves getting lower nicotine doses from sources other than cigarettes. What people often neglect is that when you quit smoking you not only have to deal with the physical addiction to nicotine, but also your psychological addiction to the act of smoking.

When you quit smoking, it helps immensely to have a new habit or hobby in place to divert your attention away from smoking. Whether it be chewing on carrot sticks and gum or going for a jog, being able to focus and think about something other than smoking greatly improves your chances of staying away from smoking.

Tip #2: Finding Your Triggers

Smoking triggers are people, events, situations, or basically anything that 'triggers' you to smoke. Go through one day of smoking, writing down each and every time you smoked and why you did it.

Not only does this help you to understand why you really smoke, but it also allows you to formulate a plan of attack on all the things that cause you to smoke.

Once you know why you smoke, you can try to find ways to avoid your smoking triggers, or deal with them in some way other than lighting up.

Tip #3: Getting Exercise

Exercise is often cited as one of the main things you need to do to get back to health, and for smokers this is even more true. Regular exercise doesn't only help get your body and your lungs back into shape, but it also has the added benefit of helping you to flush out nicotine and other toxins from your body faster.

Having a regular exercise routine to replace your regular smoking habit also helps give you something to put your mind off smoking.

Aren't you tired of the crazy claims people have made about what smoking method might be best for them? Supposed customers give some testimony and they say you can quit just like they did. They usually come with claims of 100% success, don't they? Well, if they're so good then why are there still smokers in the world. I mean if this method was so great, then why isn't it on CNN or why aren't doctors telling their patients about it? The answer is pretty simple. There is no "easy way" to smoking abstinence. There is no "100% guaranteed" way to stop. Many people have lost a ton of money thinking the latest and greatest was the answer to all their smoking problems.

Here are the facts. Quit rates for the observed and studied methods for smoking cessation are as follows:

Cold Turkey - 3-5%
Nicotine replacement - 7-10%
Zyban - between 7-10%
Chantix - around 21%
Support/counseling - roughly 25%

You can see why so many people are trying to sell you on stop smoking shots or elixirs. The quit rates are just so low. Add acupuncture (with and without the laser) and hypnosis into the mix and you still don't have much to hang your hat on. There are no clinical studies that tell us what these more holistic approaches are, but the best thought is, that it is somewhere around that of quitting cold turkey. Although, some practitioners of these arts may have more or less success than others.

The market for these methods has never been stronger. Despite all the tobacco law suits and bad press about manipulating or fixing nicotine levels to maintain the addiction, 20% of all Americans continue to smoke. Of those who do quit, roughly one-third will relapse within four years of quitting. Additionally, it takes most smokers about 7 attempts before they finally do quit for good. Finally, most every person who smokes considers quitting at least during some point or another. These are the details that many marketers are trying to capitalize on. They see this as an opportunity to promote their new and improved or herbal and natural method to stop smoking.

As we all know, if someone's desire is strong enough they may very well have success. So if someone has tried everything else and failed, they may try something non-traditional like a natural herbal concoction or some fictitious stop smoking shot. It isn't the method that allows these people to finally quit, but rather the smoker's mind simply takes over. This is called the placebo effect and it can be a powerful player in the medical community.

If a person's desire to quit is strong enough, then just about any quit smoking method will probably work - even the unproven ones. Heck, they might even quit after drinking 10 gallons of orange juice for 15 consecutive days, if they were told that would guarantee cessation. The power of suggestion can have supreme influence over the intellect if given the chance.

Remember, everyone's addiction, physiology and behavioral cues are different. Just because someone is successful or fails because of a certain method, doesn't mean you'll have the same result. Tailor a stop smoking method that is right for you.

When it comes to giving up smoking the natural way, cold turkey is a viable option. Another equally viable option is hypnosis which has proven to be an effective means of quitting. Yet another option is to try a combination of the two methods.

DEFINING COLD TURKEY:

Cold turkey is defined as "quitting smoking abruptly, without help." Most people find that getting some help along the way makes the transition from smoker to non-smoker that much smoother.

Cold turkey is a popular way to stop smoking however the failure rate is 80 percent or higher. That means you have a 1-in-5 chance of being successful. As many as 50 percent of all smokers attempt the cold turkey method as a starting off point when quitting.

Experts will be the first to tell you that the method you choose to quit smoking is not as important as how determined you are to succeed. If your determination is high then you are already off to a great start!

PREPARE YOURSELF FOR A NON-SMOKING MINDSET:

The majority who make the decision to give up smoking need all the support they can get. But that is not all they need. An effective plan for quitting is also essential to your success.

Making a detailed plan to quit and deciding on a schedule for yourself is imperative. Inform everyone in your life that you are about to become a quitter. Mentally plan and prepare yourself for what is to come - such as when cravings for a cigarette take hold of your thoughts. You need to know what to do in order to avoid situations that will make you want to light up.

One way to chart your progress as you navigate your new non-smoking terrain is to buy a diary and then record what is happening on a daily basis. In order to change your lifestyle habits you must be completely committed to adopting a new and healthier non-smoking mindset.

Cold turkey can work for you if you devote yourself fully to it. However you may discover that you need a little extra help along the way. That is where hypnosis can step in.

TAKING THE NATURAL APPROACH WITH HYPNOSIS:

The human mind is very diverse and complicated. It is also very covert and adept at hiding its innermost secrets. Hypnosis works to shed light on the secrets that remain hidden in the darkness of the subconscious mind. It is this part of the mind that holds the reins of control over our habits. This is where the smoking habit remains in hiding.

The subconscious mind makes habits a regular and routine part of your life. It does not distinguish between good and bad habits. The work of hypnosis is to travel into the subconscious mind and replace negative habits with positive habits that can allow for a happier and healthier life.

Hypnosis can be instrumental in assisting an individual to quit smoking and to maintaining their newly acquired non-smoking ideals by directly communicating with the subconscious in a manner that is both safe and effective. All the patient needs to do is to relax and have the desire to quit and the belief that hypnosis will help.

Hypnosis does not involve any medications and is good for those who have tried other methods of stop smoking but have been disappointed with the results.

Whether you chose to try cold turkey, hypnosis or both, bear in mind that stopping smoking is a process that will need your full and serious commitment as at the end of the day it is your decision.

Regardless of the variety of treatment options available for helping people quit smoking, there are only two anti-smoking prescription pills that are free of nicotine. These are Zyban and Chantix. Other available medications are classified as nicotine replacement remedies, and are mostly designed to transfer the addiction from cigarettes to the nicotine replacement product. Zyban, with Bupropion as an active substance, is basically an antidepressant that was later discovered to have nicotine antagonistic properties and have since been used as a quit smoking drug. Meanwhile, Chantix, also known as Varenicline, is a partial nicotine antagonist and is a newer addition to quit smoking drugs.

Zyban

Buopropion, the active ingredient of Zyban, is a nicotine antagonist. This means that Zyban will help decrease your body's need and/or craving for nicotine. Taken twice daily for 8-12 weeks, this pill is said to help stop smoking within 8 days after beginning the treatment.

In addition to reducing your nicotine craving, Zyban also helps alleviate certain symptoms of withdrawal, including depression, anxiety, and even short-term weight gain. A success rate of more than 15 percent has been documented for smokers who have effectively quit smoking through these pills alone. Zyban is also a popular anti-depressant preferred by most physicians since it does not cause any sexual dysfunctions unlike most pills of its kind.

However, there have been a lot of seizures recorded following Buopropion use. While those cases were later discovered to be an issue of wrong dosage, this anti-smoking pill is not advised for epileptics or patients with any seizure-inducing conditions.

Other side effects reported from Zyban are dry mouth, tinnitus, tremors, nausea, and excess sweating. A sudden interruption of Zyban use may cause generalized pain, irritability, mania, headaches, anxiety attacks, and dystonia.

Chantix

Chantix, a.k.a. Varenicline, is another commercially available nicotine free prescription drug. A recently discovered substance, Chantix has a greater success rate in stopping smoking when compared to Zyban. As a nicotine receptor partial antagonist, this pill can reduce nicotine cravings as well as decrease the extent of satisfaction smokers will get from their use of tobacco.

To date, Chantix has a 19 to 23 percent success rate in smoking cessation, which can take effect within 6 months or more into the treatment. Most stop smoking pills are taken for a 12-week period, with probability of extending for 12 more weeks if no favorable results were initially perceived.

On the other hand, Chantix does have adverse side effects that cannot be ignored, such as nausea plus various gastrointestinal problems like flatulence/constipation, pain, along with certain psychological repercussions. Varencicline has been closely linked to suicidal attempts, psychosis, increased violent tendencies, and even homicidal tendencies. As such, the drug has been banned for police agents and airline pilots. According to reports, Chantix was the number one pill with related incidents during the first quarter of 2008. Currently, the FDA has recommended further testing of Chantix.

Whatever stop smoking pill you ultimately decide to use to fight your addiction, you should always consider its potential effects and weigh your options carefully before making your choice.

If you've made the decision that you are finally going to quit smoking for good-congratulations. Having the motivation is half the battle. Now you're probably going to take a trip to the drugstore to buy a stop smoking aid such as a Nicotine Replacement Therapy-and you're about to find an overwhelming and rather costly array of products awaiting you. From nicotine gums and patches to cigarette filters to herbal capsules, the stop-smoking industry is a million-dollar business. And yet there are plenty of people who have tried everything and are still smoking a pack a day. How can this be? While its true that nicotine is a very addictive substance, the habit of smoking has a lot to do with factors beyond nicotine. This is the big secret to successfully quitting-smoking is as much an emotional habit as a physical addiction, and you need to manage both aspects of the problem.

Have you ever paid attention to the times you smoke? Most people light a cigarette right after they eat, or when they are stressed or bored. This has little to do with the amount of nicotine in your body at a given time. This is a force of habit, a pattern you have conditioned yourself into following. and you need to focus on breaking this pattern, because if you don't, you're more likely to fail in your mission to quit-and failure is just not something you can afford when it comes to dropping cigarettes.

For many people, the smoking habit is born of a nervous need to be doing something or holding something with their hands. Next time you want to reach for a cigarettes, try knitting, painting, playing the piano, anything you enjoy that will keep your hands occupied. When a craving hits, breathe slowly for two minutes. Typically, even the worst of cravings can't survive unanswered for longer than 2 minutes. If you can withstand the craving for two minutes and fill that stretch of time with some focused breathing, you'll be in the clear.

When you decide you're going to quit, smoke your last cigarette and then throw all the rest of them away. Don't keep any leftover in your house-this will be too painful a temptation. Once you give in and smoke one cigarette, one all too easily becomes two, three, four. Try sips of water or a healthy snack to manage cravings.

That's the secret to success in your journey to a cigarette free life-pay attention to both the nicotine dependence and the force of habit that conspire together to tempt you to smoke. If you can take both of these things under your control, you can beat your addiction much more easily than you might have thought possible. Good Luck!

Dear reader, if you have tried to quit smoking before, going cold Turkey or with the replacement of nicotine, and failed, then using a good hypnosis program is that extra bit of help that will tip the scales in your favor and let you succeed!

Did you know that stopping smoking with hypnosis has a success rate much higher than other methods, and for most people it takes only one session with a hypnotist to stop definitively? Most of us have heard the saying "it's all in your head" before, and this is certainly true for quitting cigarettes. The physical part of craving only lasts between one and two seconds, is the "urge to smoke now!" thoughts that create this desire that usually hang around and lead the person who stopped smoking again, this is where hypnosis gets right to the root of the problem and helps you beat the cravings.

During hypnosis, the person who wants to leave is placed in a State of relaxation of mind through guided imagery and sound, while in this state of relaxation you will be more open to suggestions and the hypnotist or audio program you selected will be implanting ideas on your smoking, such as sound effects of quitting smoking, how much better you will feel, look and smell and how much money it will save.

The best part about quit smoking with hypnosis is that you won't have to go through the first two or three weeks of arrest as a bear with a sore head and a thorn in all four legs! Because through hypnotic suggestion your mind will be thinking the positive points of quit smoking instead of shouting "feed me smoke!", and this greatly reduces the need for constant iron willpower on your part.

Another great advantage of this method we can strengthen your determination to home, this is done by going to place in your home that is as relaxing and put themselves into a State of deep relaxation you can learn from a good hypnosis audio, breathing exercises and again listening to the suggestions of the audio program. If you have already visited a hypnotist before then reinforce at home will double your chances of success. It is also much cheaper than other methods like nicotine replacement.

Now if you want to know more about quitting smoking with hypnosis there is much more information on my site.
