Are you trying to figure out how to help someone stop smoking? I'm sure you've watched them light up totally confused as to why someone wouldn't just be able to put it down, knowing how detrimental it is to their health. The fact is nicotine addiction is as powerful as an addiction to heroin or other illegal substances that we typically see as "addiction" type drugs. With physical discomfort during withdrawal and the ability to legally light up, a smoker faces even more hurdles when trying to kick the habit.

In addition to physical cravings, there are two motivators that drive the smoker to light up. The first being habit and the second being some emotional trigger. Many smokers have a cigarette first thing in the morning, after they eat, or when they're in the car on their way to work. These are "triggers" that the smoker has associated with a cigarette. One of the best ways to change a smoker's way of thinking is to change these associations to something else that is healthier and more pleasant.

If your friend or family member has expressed a desire for a cigarette, offer taking a walk or some other kind of activity. If they still indicate they would rather have a cigarette, suggest that if they spend the next 15 minutes participating in the activity, then they can indulge in a smoke. Most smokers are surprised to find, that by simply busying their mind with something else, that the craving has passed, allowing them to go a little longer without their fix. Over time, the urge to smoke becomes less frequent until it is at manageable levels.

Most smokers use smoking as a way to deal with stressful situations or uncomfortable thoughts and feelings. If you're going to know how to help someone stop smoking, then you have to understand how the smoker has associated the relief from this stress through smoking. Sometimes the smoker simply needs a new tool or method to relieve this stress.

NLP Hypnotherapy is one such tool that re-programs the brain to associate stressors with positive thoughts and feelings. The subconscious mind has been trained over time to react to certain situations in a certain way. Coupled with physical addiction, the urge to smoke can be difficult to overcome. NLP Hypnotherapy works by training the subconscious to react in a different way. Instead of craving a cigarette, that craving can now be associated with taking a walk or having a glass of water.

If you want to learn how to help someone stop smoking, you have to address the physical addiction as well as mental desire to be successful. Through physical activity and NLP Hypnotherapy, you can have your loved one on the road to being a non-smoker in no time.
