A whole new industry has been born, providing stop smoking products to those of us who want to quit. These products come in a range of pills, patches, gums, inhalers, sprays, herbal medications, books, CDs etc. You name it and there is probably a version of that product on the market. But do they work?

For some people reading a book on how to stop smoking will be enough for them to quit. In fairness, they could have probably have gone cold turkey without the book but it was probably the extra incentive they needed. For others a book isn't sufficient but listening to some mind programming CDs may prove effective.

A lot of people have tried the prescription medications to stop smoking. Zyban is very common and despite some unpleasant side effects, seems to work very well for a lot of people who haven't been able to quit using other measures. St Johns Wort is an herbal remedy that some have found to be very effective in dealing with the cravings associated with giving up smoking.

Nicotine replacement therapy opens up a whole range of stop smoking products. There are nasal sprays, patches or lozenges, gums and inhalers. The sprays and the lozenges work very quickly as they target the areas of your body where the lining is very thin thus releasing the nicotine into your system quicker. The problem with these products is, not only can they themselves become addictive, but they don't always cure the physiological addiction people have to cigarettes. It is not purely the nicotine which makes people fail when quitting, it actually only takes about two weeks for the nicotine to completely leave your system. It is the fact that we associate smoking with various activities e.g. having a drink, a meal or after sex. If we do not change our behavior we will continue to crave the cigarette long after the nicotine has left us.

One of the newer stop smoking products on the market is the electronic cigarette. This gives smokers something to keep their hands occupied which can be another problem for those trying to give up. This is a great alternative for the habitual smoker.

Acupuncture, hypnotherapy and Yoga are three other methods that could help when you try to quit. While not really anti smoking products, various therapists have sold their services under the quit cigarettes banner.

In fairness to all above, the most efficient stop smoking product is your own brain and will power. If you really do not want to quit, none of the above products are going to help you.

In this article I'm going to explain the best stop smoking aids. If you are looking for the best stop smoking aids, I can understand how confusing it may be. There are a ton of different approaches and a ton of different products for each approach that all claim that there product is the best. It took me many times for me to finally quit for good. I've been through a lot of different products and tried a lot of different aids first hand. Below is a description of the best popular stop smoking and its effectiveness in helping its users quit smoking for the long run.

Nicotine Patches and Gums

Nicotine patches and gums are the most popular type of approach that most people will opt to use. The companies that makes these are huge so they spend a lot of money advertising its use and effectiveness. Although patches and gums are so popular, there is actually really high failure rates with these aids. This is because when you continue to give your body nicotine, it makes the cessation process long and strenuous. The cravings will also be very hard to quit, which makes quitting for the long term difficult using nicotine replacement therapy. For these reasons, this many not be the best option you can take.

Quitting Cold Turkey

When you quit cold turkey, you are abruptly stopping the intake of nicotine. This is one of the most difficult things to do, but it also will have the best payout. This is because when you stop smoking and giving yourself nicotine, the cessation process will be much faster and your cravings will go away much sooner. The reason why this approach has seen such low success rates is because most people find it extremely difficult to handle the intense cravings and withdrawal symptoms. When your body is demanding a cigarette, and you have to deal with withdrawal symptoms such as cold symptoms, insomnia, cold sweats, depression, anxiety, and stomach pains at the same time, it makes quitting almost impossible.

Herbal Stop Smoking Pills

I've seen the most success with this method. Herbal stop smoking pills are the best stop smoking aids for a few reasons. You won't be using any nicotine, so this makes the quitting process much faster and more effective. Also, they are certain herbs that effective in handling your cravings and withdrawal symptoms. For example, Lobelia inflata will give your nervous system similar effects of smoking which will handle your cravings. There are other herbs that will dramatically decrease each of your withdrawal symptoms to relax your body and promote calmness. The reason why herbal stop smoking pills are so effective is because they contain all of these important herbs in one capsule. Since its all-natural, there are little to no side effects you'll have to worry about. This will put your body in the most comfortable position to successfully quit.

With the push today to get everybody to quit smoking, today a smoker can choose a wide range of stop smoking treatments of his own personal choice. With different choices of a stop smoking treatment coming out all the time, if one doesn't work for you then another one may - or you can choose several types of treatment to work together.

But the best stop smoking treatment will be your own determination and will to want to quit - if you don't want to, then the entire stop smoking aids together will not work. Once you decide to quit, and chose the date you are throwing away your last cigarette, the option you choose as a treatment is the one you are the most comfortable with: inhalers, patches, injections, pills, pills, or cold turkey. This can be natural or traditional medicine - with everything being a matter of personal preference or medical concerns.

The cold turkey method has an advantage over all other treatments, as the nicotine will be out of your system in just a few days. But the largest disadvantage is the withdrawals will be extremely intense and painful. But what happens is the body demands its maximum amount of nicotine that it has had over the years. Long-term heavy smokers use this method over all the others - about 90% of smokers will suffer through these first 72 hours to two weeks of exhausting and hard cold-turkey from nicotine to make the body 100% nicotine clean and chemical withdrawn.

And as you read this, you think of pain and suffering instead of a short period of withdrawal but of the 90% of smokers who use it, they have a larger chance of success than with the other stop smoking treatments. The body recognizes there will be no nicotine offered and the pain and withdrawal stress will disappear, as compared to a slow and easy treatment. The body knows it will eventually be getting some amount of nicotine, creating some form of chronic state of drug withdrawal. It is a matter of choice - two weeks compared to life.

If cold turkey doesn't appeal to you, try one of the other popular stop smoking treatment for nicotine replacement therapy. It gives the smokers a wide range of products to choose from with each product releasing a small amount of nicotine into the body, negating the urge to smoke. Some of the nicotine products that have been developed to kill the smoking urge are: the nicotine inhaler, nicotine gum and the nicotine patch. Or the smoker can use a pill like Zyban to stop smoking.

Zyban prods the pituitary gland to release endorphins in the bloodstream, which, in turn, cause a positive upswing in the smoker's mood. Generally, a Zyban course lasts 8 to 12 weeks and should be taken under medical supervision.

A few other unique methods is to quit naturally, using the time-tested Asian therapy of acupressure. In this therapy, silver needles are used to release energy inside the body while creating a sense of well being, assisting the smoker to combat withdrawal symptoms. Another way to combat withdrawal symptoms is to take laser treatment. The low intensity laser beam stimulates the release of endorphins, and kills the urge to smoke. Some smokers also use herbal cigarettes to give up the habit.

Besides this, the smokers can take the help of clinics or self-help groups that provide advice and guidance. Such clinics provide counseling to individuals who want to give up smoking. They conduct mind exercises to improve an individual's will power and the desire to return to smoking. Hypnosis is yet another method that can be used to give up smoking.

Considerable self-discipline is needed for any of these treatments to work. More often than not, smokers give up smoking for a few days or a few weeks and then pick up the habit again. They need the support of family members and close friends during this troublesome period. To quit smoking and recover from the nicotine addiction is a period of readjustment of the mind and body. Over time, the body and mind combination heals itself and breaks free of the addiction, teaching itself to function without cigarettes or any form of tobacco on a dependency level.

The same way different people smoke and are addicted differently, they will also quit and recover in the same ways. Some can quit and walk away with no symptoms or problems, while others double over with pure intense physical pain with multiple symptoms. This is why there are so many different stop smoking treatments for assorted types of smokers. Know yourself and what works the best and the most efficient way

The first step to quitting smoking is to make the decision to actually quit. Once you have decided that you are going to pursue a path in life that does not involve cigarettes you can begin the process of getting rid of your bodies dependency on nicotine and tobacco itself. This process is a difficult one that will involve serious will power, although lucky for us their are a wide variety of patches, gums, and other less traditional methods available to help curve the cravings.

Most notably and for some least effective we have the nicotine gum. This gum is no ordinary gum in that it contains a significant amount of nicotine. To use, a person must chew the gum every time he or she has a craving for a cigarette. This is a healthy alternative to lighting up, and can help to deter the addiction.

If gum isn't quite your speed, their is a similar product in the form of a patch which helps to also get rid of the cravings that you may get throughout the day. These patches are costly, however they do tend to work on patients whom are using their will power to say no to cigarettes.

Other forms of quit smoking aids include what is known as quit smoking hypnosis. This is a procedure in which a hypnotist will hypnotize the addicted smoker in hopes of removing the thoughts about cigarettes through the form of mind management. This procedure is a bit off the wall and can sound ineffective, but if you stick to the program you are sure to have the results that you desire.

When I was struggling with nicotine, I tried literally all the stop-smoking products on the market. I tried gums, patches, lozenges, prescription medications, inhalers, nasal sprays, and a range of stop-smoking herbs. They all worked to varying degrees, but none of them were permanent solutions to my problem. No matter what I'd try, it was only a matter of time before I relapsed into my old addiction. Whether it took a week or six months, these quit-smoking aids always failed me.

The Importance of Determination

The main reason why nothing worked is obvious. Apparently, I just didn't have the will and determination needed to quit. If I'd felt deeply certain that I was going to succeed in my quitting, then I'm sure any of these quitting methods could have done the trick.

In the end, the quit-smoking aids you choose to use are not important. If you have determination and the certainty that you want to quit, these products are practically unnecessary. Sure, it may make you feel better to use something to help you along your path. But the fact is that the best stop smoking aid is your own mind. If you don't have the will to succeed, it's just not going to happen.

Which Stop-Smoking Products Work?

A small percentage of the people who try nicotine replacement products have success. Things like the gum and patches work by delivering nicotine into your body through means other than cigarettes. Which is fine in the short-term, but what happens a few weeks down the line when you're still addicted to nicotine and you have a stressful day? Are you really going to be satisfied with a piece of gum? This is the problem that many people run into.

Prescription quit-smoking aids have been known to help as well, but you can only get them through your doctor, and there's a good chance that your doctor won't want to prescribe them for you. After all, they're serious medications with real side effects. From your doctor's perspective, why put a patient through that when there are other ways to quit smoking?

I did have surprising success with stop-smoking herbs, but, as with many herbal products, it was hard to tell if the results were real or just a placebo effect. In the end, I relapsed back into smoking.

Quit Without Products

In reality, the best way to quit is to forget about stop-smoking products entirely and go cold turkey. If you don't think you have the strength to face up to this, you can try one of the alternative treatments used to make cold-turkey quitting go over easier.

For example, you could try to stop smoking with hypnosis. This is what worked for me, so I'm biased in favor of it. You might have doubts about hypnosis, as many people do, but believe me, it works. It enables you to go cold turkey with strength and determination. It shortens your withdrawal period, reduces your cravings, and makes you feel like you never want to smoke again.
