Quit smoking cold turkey success rates are reported to be as low as 5%. I have been wondering why this is so and whether or not it is true. And I think I have an answer for why people think quit smoking cold turkey is such an ineffective way of giving up the smokes.

In my definition, quitting smoking cold turkey means not using anything other than your own ability to overcome the need to smoke. This means no use of varenicline, (chantix and champix), zyban (wellbutrin and bupropion), nicotine patches, gum, lozenges, tabs, nasal sprays or inhalers. You should not be using acupuncture, laser therapy, silver acetate sprays, aversion therapies, chain smoking, hypnosis, clonidine, opoid antagonists, anxiolytics, anti-depressants, nicocure, nicobrevin, lobeline or mecamylamine - to mention a 'phew' of the options!

When you think of someone quitting smoking cold turkey, it is the sudden cut off from cigarettes without any support other than ones own mental prowess over the problem of nicotine addiction.

Quitting smoking cold turkey does not rule out the use of educational materials to understand your relationship both with cigarettes and your number one enemy, nicotine.

In the many years that I tried to quit smoking before realising the secret of quitting smoking, I found that I was unable to overcome the evil weed because I had not learned how to quit smoking before trying to do it. I had read all the common materials and the pamphlets that came with my nicotine patches and pills and inhalers! Nothing, nada, zip in there taught me how to quit smoking.

We often read that certain products offer highly successful quit rates when compared to cold turkey quitters but what we are not being told is that the cold turkey quitters aren't even getting any help to quit smoking in these studies.

If you take 20 smokers and leave them alone for a year, chances are that one will quit smoking, even though over 14-18 of them wants to quit smoking.

In most studies comparing the latest quit smoking drug, the 'control group' (the cold turkey group) are just told to quit smoking. They may be given some sugar pills or some sticky patches (without nicotine) but they are normally just left to their own devices. No surprise then that they all fail miserably with only about 5% successfully quitting.

There is a difference between being told to quit because it is bad for you and being advised to quit and 'this is how you do it'. Let me use an analogy.

Imagine, without any computer knowledge at all, you were given the task of setting up a company human resources database. You were placed in front of an internet enabled computer and given a week to complete the task or you would be assured an early death. How many people could do it?

I reckon about only a tiny fraction would be able to apply themselves to the task and complete it. Most would fail miserably, just as smokers do when they try to quit smoking without any support or education or advice.

You see, there is always a small percentage of the population could succeed in any task set them. Not always the same 5% of course, depending upon the task, but there are always some that will just knuckle down, apply themselves and figure out how to do it. For the rest of us, we need help in the form of guidance and instruction.

Quitting smoking requires motive, means and opportunity.

Your motive to quit smoking should be the never ending torrent of medical and general opinion pointing out what a futile and self destructive act smoking tobacco is. The health risks are just preposterous!

You means to quit smoking is the need to learn how you should do it. It is not best achieved with some of the pills or potions or any of the other interventions I mentioned earlier in this article. Studies have proven that over 85% of long term quitters, quit using nothing more than education and attitude as their main means of achieving a smoke free life.

Finally, your opportunity is now. Most smokers will carp on about quitting this week or this month or this year, as not being the right time to quit. That, I am afraid is a load of rubbish. The usual birthday, wedding, stress excuses are merely excuses to keep on smoking, they are not reasons to not quit - there is a difference! The best opportunity to quit smoking by any means including cold turkey is right now!

Never stop trying to quit.

Today, most of us want to quit smoking than ever. There is a good reason for this-we are soon to find out, sucks. Of course it's not "cool", it feels really bad long-term-to be honest-we might think die ways certainly better.

It is still the most popular way to get it going ' cold Turkey '. The name may not mean, that way you leave cigarettes, take you expel him and no longer buy. That's right-just stop. No help, no stains, no. The chances of success? Statistically, the 3%. However, it strongly depends on the person, and there are several ways that we can improve our chance without drugs or supplements.

Improve your chances of successfully Quiting cold Turkey

Problem: in the long run for each smoker is the most powerful force behind our is looking for a mental habit. This means that our mind has learned that depends on the ' feeling ' is a smoke at us. Generally, this is a form of distraction.

Solution: we can enhance our ability to cold-Turkey are the first way thus identifying things that we (trigger) and wants to stop smoking. This could hang all food & beverage, to go to the bar or a roomful of friends smoking. Write in a journal and will help you learn how good your memory is more efficient-it doesn't matter.

Problem: the next stronger cigarette force trying to chemical dependency. Our body learns, organize the nicotine (and other chemicals in the FAG) feels good. We are careful to do this and start cravings. These usually have a 40 minutes, with most smokers cyclo gives way after an hour.

This poses as an obstacle, if we try to stop. Why? Withdrawal symptoms as they seem to suck more than smoking. The list goes on great restlessness, insomnia, nausea, headaches, lethargy. Hereby, the weak point of quitting cold Turkey be. There was nothing that could be done without drugs or supplements.

Solution: now we know how ' mind tools ' how to use NLP to invert our bodies respond to nicotine withdrawal. You can adjust literally ' programs ' stimulus and perception of pain in your brain to aid digestion, nervous system installation. This incredible new knowledge is cheap to buy and easy to use, most of the time that you are currently reading or Listening. Statistically speaking, has a much higher efficacy rate than cold Turkey or even NRT (nicotine replacement therapy) alone.

Conventionally, the average smoker about 7 attempts to take, before it finally quit. The combination of cold Turkey style with modern psychology knows, however, we can greatly speed up the process and suffer.

Thought that it all starts with a strong belief in yourself – the only one that still freely accessible for you!

Introduction

The vast majority of smokers who cease smoking permanently smoking do so without any type of medication (eg Lee and Kahende, Am J Public Health 97: 1503-1509, 2007). Most people who have quit smoking successfully have either used cold turkey or reducing smoking prior to stopping.

The aim of this article is to examine cold turkey in combination with positive thinking as a method of smoking cessation.

First attempt to stop smoking

In general, the first attempt to stop smoking is unlikely to be successful. The individual needs to be committed in order to have a good chance of quitting. One of the reasons that early attempts to cease smoking may be unsuccessful are because they are not serious attempts (Chapman et al.,PLoS Medicine Public Library of Science 7, 2010).

Cold turkey

"Cold turkey" is the sudden arrest of the use of nicotine in any form. It has been estimated that, at least 80% of people who have successfully stopped smoking have used this method (Doran et al. Addict Behav. 31:758-66, 2006).

The Advantages of using Cold Turkey as a Smoking Cessation Method

There are 2 principle advantages of using cold turkey to quit smoking.

1. It is cheaper.

2. The process of quitting nicotine is completed much faster. In fact, you have stopped using nicotine the day you put out your last cigarette.

How Positive Thinking may help you to Stop Smoking

I was a 30 a day smoker myself for over 30 years. During the last 10 years, I made many attempts to become a non-smoker. The method I used to stop smoking was cold turkey.

I finally succeeded in stopping smoking with the help of positive thinking. I found that it was a relatively stress-free way of stopping.

Believing that you will succeed appears to be an important factor in smoking cessation. A study of ex-smokers who had used cold turkey as the method to quit smoking indicated that 53% found that stopping was "not at all difficult"; 27% found it "fairly difficult", and only 20% found it very difficult (Chapman et al,. PLoS Medicine Public Library of Science 7, 2010).

This is where positive thinking comes in. Positive thinkers are more likely to believe that they can stop.

The Happy Ex-Smoker

After I stopped smoking, I felt very positive. In addition, I found that when I was facing another short-term challenge in life, I was able to use the same techniques that I used to stop smoking. I am now much more resilient to challenges having a negative effect on me. Moreover, my positive thoughts have improved my social life and has provided me with a variety of exciting opportunities in life.

When it comes to giving up smoking the natural way, cold turkey is a viable option. Another equally viable option is hypnosis which has proven to be an effective means of quitting. Yet another option is to try a combination of the two methods.

DEFINING COLD TURKEY:

Cold turkey is defined as "quitting smoking abruptly, without help." Most people find that getting some help along the way makes the transition from smoker to non-smoker that much smoother.

Cold turkey is a popular way to stop smoking however the failure rate is 80 percent or higher. That means you have a 1-in-5 chance of being successful. As many as 50 percent of all smokers attempt the cold turkey method as a starting off point when quitting.

Experts will be the first to tell you that the method you choose to quit smoking is not as important as how determined you are to succeed. If your determination is high then you are already off to a great start!

PREPARE YOURSELF FOR A NON-SMOKING MINDSET:

The majority who make the decision to give up smoking need all the support they can get. But that is not all they need. An effective plan for quitting is also essential to your success.

Making a detailed plan to quit and deciding on a schedule for yourself is imperative. Inform everyone in your life that you are about to become a quitter. Mentally plan and prepare yourself for what is to come - such as when cravings for a cigarette take hold of your thoughts. You need to know what to do in order to avoid situations that will make you want to light up.

One way to chart your progress as you navigate your new non-smoking terrain is to buy a diary and then record what is happening on a daily basis. In order to change your lifestyle habits you must be completely committed to adopting a new and healthier non-smoking mindset.

Cold turkey can work for you if you devote yourself fully to it. However you may discover that you need a little extra help along the way. That is where hypnosis can step in.

TAKING THE NATURAL APPROACH WITH HYPNOSIS:

The human mind is very diverse and complicated. It is also very covert and adept at hiding its innermost secrets. Hypnosis works to shed light on the secrets that remain hidden in the darkness of the subconscious mind. It is this part of the mind that holds the reins of control over our habits. This is where the smoking habit remains in hiding.

The subconscious mind makes habits a regular and routine part of your life. It does not distinguish between good and bad habits. The work of hypnosis is to travel into the subconscious mind and replace negative habits with positive habits that can allow for a happier and healthier life.

Hypnosis can be instrumental in assisting an individual to quit smoking and to maintaining their newly acquired non-smoking ideals by directly communicating with the subconscious in a manner that is both safe and effective. All the patient needs to do is to relax and have the desire to quit and the belief that hypnosis will help.

Hypnosis does not involve any medications and is good for those who have tried other methods of stop smoking but have been disappointed with the results.

Whether you chose to try cold turkey, hypnosis or both, bear in mind that stopping smoking is a process that will need your full and serious commitment as at the end of the day it is your decision.

Everybody's smoking habit is their own, even though every smoker shares some very common characteristics. But, individual physiology and chemistry, genetics, social pressures and environmental cues all influence an individual's smoking pattern. I once treated a patient who told me he could never even think about quitting smoking. He thought this because his mom and dad were lifelong smokers who were unable to successfully quit, in spite of numerous quit attempts. He felt he was doomed to become a lifelong smoker as well.

Many smokers feel this way. They may focus in on a single reason as to why they cannot quit, rather than finding bigger and more important reasons to quit. My patient could have taken the approach that it was more important to break the cycle of smoking in his family, before his kids followed in his footsteps.

This thought process is at the root of so many failed attempts. People in general, make life decisions based on their own personal experiences or observations. It can be said that someone who smokes, only knows how to view life as a smoker. If they are one of the 85% of Americans addicted to nicotine, then they have likely gone out of their normal behavior patterns to accommodate that addiction. In fact, their primary coping mechanism is to light up another cigarette. As a counselor told me one time, "normal people don't do that." His point was, a person cannot use their coping mechanism if their coping mechanism is what they're addicted to. The vast majority of smokers are simply ill-equipped to handle the adversity associated with stopping on their own. This is evidenced by the very low success rate (3 - 5.5%) seen with quitting cold turkey.

The alternative is to get some help. Most of us are taught from childhood to be independent and self-reliant. If given the choice between asking for assistance or figuring it out on our own, most of us, would choose to go at it on our own. We'd rather fail than lose face. It's not surprising then, that relatively few smokers will consistently participate in a behavioral therapy or group counseling program (less than 5%). These types of programs have been studied for years and years and consistently average a 20% success rate. That's nearly a six-fold improvement over cold turkey. Yet, the stigma of "counseling" will prevent people from drastically changing their lives for the better. Others fear the cost of such a program may break their bank. However, the cost data clearly show that group sessions are the single most cost-effective smoking cessation intervention available. This figures in the dramatic success rate, which then incorporates the cost-avoidance associated with no longer purchasing the tobacco products over the remaining expected lifetime of the former smoker.

The key elements of a successful behavioral program include an assessment of the stages of change, identification of a person's barriers to quitting, as well as, the development of a tailored cessation program for the individual and a plan to address relapse prevention. Frequently, the designed smoking cessation plan will incorporate the use of pharmaceutical stop smoking aids. Interestingly, the drug companies have taken notice and many now offer a patient-support program with their smoking cessation products.

I know, smokers stop on their own all the time. Many even stay smoke-free for a lifetime after quitting cold turkey. However, many, many more quit when they get a little help. Do yourself and everyone around you a favor and follow their success stories. Enroll in a smoking cessation program or seek professional advice. It may cost you more than a few dollars if you don't.

I want to explain the reasons why I am such a big fan of people who quit smoking cold turkey. It is not because they are heroes, able to overcome the evils of nicotine and tobacco without help, it is because it is the best way to quit smoking.

Statistical evidence from both Australia and the United states indicates that of all the smokers who have ever quit smoking, over 85% of them have done so successfully by using the quit smoking cold turkey method.

For all of the magic pills and potions available out there, it seems they account for only 15% of all the successful long term quits. This may seem strange given that the quit smoking cold turkey method boasts such a low success rate when compared to the other solutions.

Nicotine replacement therapy allegedly boasts a doubling of success rates in quitting smoking. Zyban apparently trebles the rate and chantix apparently quadruples the rate. Whilst this looks like great news for smokers, it hides a dirty little secret. These methods are successful in the short term, but in the longer term, there is growing opinion based on statistical evidence that these ex-smokers fall back into a life of cigarettes more easily than cold turkeys!

Just a side note here - the company that manufactures Chantix, Pfizer, claims a 44% success rate but it is clear that this is not the case as independent analysis of their data and independent research proves the research was heavily biased in favour of the drug!

My argument here is not that these methods don't increase your chances of success, my point is that long term success is more important than short term success. To quit smoking cold turkey gives you a better chance of long term success than using chemical intervention.

If I told you that you could have $10,000 now and never again or $100 every month for the rest of your life, I hope you would take the latter option.

When we choose to quit smoking cold turkey, we are taking the boring, un-flamboyant but ultimately successful approach as opposed to the glamorous, substance-less short term glory of pills and potions.

At this point you might be thinking well, I'd rather have a better chance in the short term in the hope that you can achieve long term success. You might be thinking that NRT and zyban and chantix offer this to you, but they don't.

To quit smoking cold turkey merely means to not use any chemical interventions such as NRT, zyban, chantix, hypnosis, acupuncture, nicocure, laser therapy, herbal remedies or whatever other miracle cure is being offered at the moment. When you chose to quit smoking cold turkey, you should not do it using brute will power, you should do it using your positive attitude and a whole lot of education about how to quit smoking.

Here is the thing - most people when they think of the quit smoking cold turkey method think it means just stopping smoking - it doesn't. Get yourself educated and learn how to quit smoking before you do it - the success rate for people who quit smoking like this is in excess of 40%. Sure there is a ton of information out there about eating healthily, setting a quit date and all that other stuff about making quitting smoking a big deal. In my opinion it is rubbish simply BECAUSE it makes quitting smoking a big deal

The bigger a deal you make out of quitting smoking, the harder it gets. Buying a can of soup is easy and it isn't a big deal and there aren't support forums littered over the internet for buying cans of soup. Quitting smoking should be treated the same. Learn how to do and then get on with doing it and forget about it. You weren't born a smoker so you sure as hell can return to being a non-smoker.

Whilst I clearly condone education as the best method to quit smoking cold turkey, if you must, try the other methods and remember, any method is only successful if it is 100% successful to you. Good luck and never stop trying to quit.

Many people have heard of the cold turkey quit smoking method but where does the phrase 'cold turkey' actually come from? Well, it is thought to be a description of the withdrawal effects that heroine addicts must endure when they stop using. One of these withdrawal symptoms is a cold sweat leading to goose pimples on a clammy skin. It's about the same a cold turkey before it goes in the oven at thanksgiving (without the butter of course!).

The origins of the phrase cold turkey also underline the extreme physical pain associated with heroine withdrawal. It is such a powerful drug (hence all the social problems it causes) that it leaves addicts with severe physical side effects when not taken. This extreme is erroneously transferred into the smokers' mind when using the cold turkey quit smoking method. Quitting smoking is nowhere near as painful!

Personally, I define the cold turkey quit smoking method as any method that does not employ the use of drugs or physical aids or 'crutches' to support the smoker. By this I mean the likes of nicotine replacement therapy (patches, gum, lozenges, spray etc.), chantix, zyban or any herbal treatment, fake cigarettes or aversion therapies.

I do consider things like cognitive behavioural therapy and hypnotherapy to fall into the cold turkey quit smoking method because they do not condone the use of drugs to try and assist the smoker. They condone the power of the mind to overcome the problem of nicotine addiction.

In the case of acupuncture and laser therapy, there is little evidence that these methods work and they both require physical interference. Anecdotally of course, there are many ex-smokers that used these methods but studies have shown no improvement in quit rates when compared to cold 'turkeyers'.

Hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy are both cold turkey quit smoking methods that are known to be effective. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a means of changing your thinking (cognition) and behaviour to a specific event, habit or aspect of life.

Unlike the classic cold turkey "lock-yourself-in-a-room-and-suffer" method of quitting smoking, hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy work by dealing with smokers' mental perceptions of smoking.

In the case of hypnotherapy as a cold turkey quit smoking method, the smoker may be 'taught' to respond to cravings for cigarettes by thinking about a pleasant time in their life to get over the craving. The smoker may also be 'taught' to dislike smoking. Many people successfully quit smoking using hypnosis but many fail too.

In the case of cognitive behavioural therapy, smokers are presented with a whole new view on smoking. It is a system by which the hugely complicated psychological trap of smoking, is broken down into bite-size pieces. Each piece of the trap is then dismantled, leaving smokers with little choice but to quit of their own free will.

Unlike the classic cold turkey quit smoking method, smokers who quit using cognitive behavioural therapy often report knowing that they have quit and that they will never smoke again. It is not the same with hypnotherapy or acupuncture or laser therapy.

I am of course a proponent of cognitive behavioural therapy. When I stopped smoking using this method, it was an epiphany. It was like my eyes had been opened after years in the darkness. The moment I stopped I knew I would never have another cigarette and it was a hugely liberating experience. However, it is not the same for everyone and there is no 'one-size-fits-all' method for quitting smoking.

Generally, my advice to all smokers is to try any and every method to find the one that works for them. There are many ways to get off cigarettes and the cold turkey quit smoking method is just one of them.

Spending money on money-back guaranteed systems first is the best approach because if that system doesn't work, you can get your cash back and move onto the next. If it does work, it will be money well spent. But my final and most important piece of advice to any would be quitter is to never give up trying to quit, no matter how soul destroying the process seems.

Here are some benefits and facts of not smoking. The benefits and facts of not smoking are so many. Let us look at just two positive benefits when we start the process to stop smoking.
1- lower blood pressure
2- increased oxygen levels in the blood.
With lower blood pressure and increased oxygen levels in the blood we give our bodies the help it needs to get better. There is a big benefit to those who have stopped smoking because they have better healthier lives. After they have stopped smoking they will tell they can breathe better, smell better and food was good again. They had a better out look on life as well. They had more money in their pockets. We don't keep count of what bad habits cost us but we should. Our health is our big loser and what price could we put on that. Research has shows that these two along can help our health and over time really help our brain. The brain needs the increased oxygen levels.

Now let us look at just four of the short-term benefits for stopping the smoking habit.
1-Our blood pressure, pulse, and body temperature will return to normal.
2-Our body starts to heal itself.
3-The carbon monoxide and oxygen levels in our blood will return to normal.
4-Our chances of having a serious heart attack decreases by almost half.
By allowing our bodies to have the normal amounts of the above we will cause it to heal its self from the damage that we received from smoking.

Here are some facts why we should stop smoking and ask people not to smoke as well. Her are the facts about deaths in the United States during 2000 through 2004 by specific causes, as follows:

o Lung cancer: 128,900 deaths
o Other cancers: 35,300 deaths
o Ischemic Heart Disease: 126,000 deaths
o Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: 92,900 deaths
o Stroke: 15,900 deaths
o Other diagnoses: 44,000 deaths Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of death.
o deaths annually, about 443,000 deaths per year.
o An estimated 49,000 of these deaths are the result of secondhand smoke exposure.
o On average, smokers die 13 to 14 years earlier than nonsmokers.
o Cigarette smoking increases the length of time that people live with a disability.

For all of those people who want to stop smoking now,now is the time to stop smoking. We all have said:" If I just could find a way to stop that worked now I would. By stop smoking we can help to avoid diseases of the respiratory tract and diseases of the cardiovascular system. However the younger we do it the better.

Now, on the way to stop smoking we must learn a proven way through information. Once we have the information we will have a plan to follow. The information must have a series of truths about the psychology of smoking that will explain why you smoke and how you can overcome your habit. We all need to be taught in life how to over come our problems. There is a therapy called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy a method used by psychologists and psychiatrists to get patients off heroin, cocaine, alcohol and other highly addictive drugs. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is used to change the way someone thinks about what they do and why they do it. It is easy to follow because it breaks down a big or overwhelming problem like smoking into lots of easily solved parts. We smoke for all the wrong reasons as a result of a wrongful learned response and those learned responses are so ingrained in us we have no way of escaping the problem without help.

Some people prefer to reduce the number of cigarettes each day instead of trying to quit smoking cold turkey. Very few people are able to quit his habit gradually. Smoking is one of the most deadly addictions but we take lightly because it affects us slowly. If you have smoked for a long time, you should understand how hard it is to say goodbye to this habit. While some people prefer a gradual reduction in the number of cigarettes they smoke while quitting, many people would rather stop smoking cold turkey. I was one of those people. This means that a person quits because of their sheer will, from one day to the next.

It's not true that not much preparation goes into it when you stop smoking cold turkey. It's often just the opposite. People who have sufficiently prepared themselves both mentally and emotionally (although it's not always a conscious process) to reach an unequivocal decision to stop smoking cold turkey are those who then pull it off and quit once and for all.

When you stop smoking cold turkey, it very often means that you don't use any other aids such as nicotine gums or patches.

There are many natural aids which will support you without any side effects. They are also FREE. One of them is exercise. It's a very good way to balance your body as soon as you stop smoking. It's one of the signs that you choose to take care of your health. It builds confidence, gives you a wonderful activity which probably never involved smoking for you and helps you learn to breathe properly.

Also important is to stop doing things which were associated with smoking or which you enjoyed doing while smoking. For example, stay away from coffee and alcohol for a couple of weeks after quitting smoking. The same applies to certain foods. The psychological attachment to certain foods and habits associated for you with smoking should be recognized and loosened, as it tends to pull people back into their smoking past.

When I stopped smoking cold turkey many years ago, I did it during a vacation. I knew that I couldn't comfortably sit on one particular bench in the lobby of our office, because it was my regular hangout while "grabbing a smoke". The association was too strong. But after a couple of weeks without a cigarette, going back to that spot wasn't a problem.

You will need to face and be willing to conquer some of the unpleasant feelings and withdrawal symptoms early on when you stop smoking cold turkey. Nicotine is addictive and there can be strong withdrawal symptoms initially. They can be easily overcome with will power and the right attitude. Remember - it's always mind over matter. The more sure you are of your goal, the easier it will be. And with every passing hour the path becomes smoother as nicotine is leaving your tissues and cravings gradually disappear.

The best defense against the side effects of irritability, cravings, insomnia, fatigue, headaches, tension etc, is keeping in mind the benefits you are striving for when you can finally become a "non-smoker". You need to focus your mind on your desire to attain this goal and then all else will fall into the right perspective.

Drinking plenty of water helps with the detox process and will speed it up. It flushes toxins out of your body. As the remaining nicotine is thrown out of your system, the urge for more nicotine lessens.

The sense of achievement and the freedom you will experience once you quit will be well worth every bit of discomfort you may encounter during the first week. You see, the benefit of stopping smoking cold turkey is that it's the fastest way to break the habit! Remember that and only that. You will never regret having quit smoking!

According to U.S. Surgeon General statistics, approximately 20% of male and female adults in the U.S. smoke cigarettes. We've all heard the news about how smoking causes cancer and may complicate other health factors on your life.

But none of this information seems to help you give up the smoking habit.

Quitting smoking cold turkey is no easy feat, but it can be done. Here are a couple quick tips to get you thinking about the process:

First, if you want to stop smoking, you must become personally convinced that this is something you want to do. Nicotine is such an addictive drug that no amount of cajoling or pushing by those around you will convince you to quit. The desire and will to quit must come from within you first.

Adding insult to injury, the statistics associated with smoking cessation are kind of scary, and flat out discouraging. It is estimated that around 15 million smokers try to quit smoking each day. However, less than 3% of these people stop smoking successfully for 3 to 12 months.

Wow, that stinks.

But you don't have to be one of those 97% of people who fail in their attempts to quit smoking.

Second, The trick to quitting smoking cold turkey is to surround yourself with supportive people, get the right information about smoking cessation, and take it one day at a time. Quitting smoking requires that you set a goal to quit, which means you need to identify how you are personally motivated to achieve a goal. Some people are influenced to stop smoking by peer pressure, others by the health risks, and some by the cost of buying cigarettes. If you're lucky, you will be influenced by all three.

If you can identify and focus on the one key motivator behind your desire to stop smoking, you will be well on the road to quitting smoking cold turkey and leading a smoke free lifestyle.

I'm asked a lot about addiction. For the last 20+ years addiction and pain relief have been my business. But without a doubt, one of the biggest questions I get asked is how do I stop smoking. People are searching for either a more effective way to quit, or are looking for solutions that are more permanent. I'm sure, even if you're not a smoker, you know the "common" practices employed to help stop nicotine addiction. There's:

- Going "cold turkey" and quitting immediately without any aid...

- Tapering, quitting gradually by reducing consumption over time...
