Cigarettes are smoked by more than a billion people worldwide. It causes many health problems, some of them potentially fatal - for example lung cancer and heart disease. It is also an expensive habit. How many more reasons do you need to give up? Here, anyhow, are four tips that could help you to kick the habit.

Tip 1: Rise above the cravings

Many of us use cigarettes as crutches, "something to do with my hands". You need to visualise yourself in everyday situations without a cigarette in your hand, this is a simple technique that can really help. You should also try taking deep breaths when you are hit by cravings, and keep busy. Sort out all those household or office tasks that you have been putting off, and you will have less time to think about smoking.

Tip 2: All the reasons to quit

You need to work out why you want to quit, what the benefits of giving up smoking would be, and write it all down. Maybe you don't like the smell of stale smoke on your clothes. Maybe you are worried that your children will follow in your footsteps. Whatever it is, put pen to paper and then keep a diary of how you are feeling, this will help you to view the situation in an objective manner.

Tip 3: The good, the bad and the ugly

Similarly, make a list of what will happen if you don't quit. You could suffer from ill health or maybe cancer. Premature death and debt or being socially ostracized by your non smoking friends can also happen to you as well as having bad breath and yellow teeth. No matter how trivial or how momentous, write it down. Once you've done this you should also remind yourself of the benefits of giving up.

Tip 4: Break time!

Many smokers stop for a cigarette so that they can take a break. You can still take breaks during the day, it's good for you, but do something that is positive, that is good for you. Eat fruit, drink water, take a walk, stop to talk with (non smoking) friends. All of these activities will have a beneficial effect on your physical and mental health and can help to strengthen your resolve to quit.

There are a few pharmaceutical products used to treat smoking dependence. One relatively new medical trend is the use of anti-depressants to help people quit smoking. Anti-depressants are prescribed by physicians help people stop smoking because they help reduce some of the depression associated with nicotine withdrawal.

GlaxoSmithKline is one of the major producers of anti-depressants. Glaxo sells Zyban and Wellbutrin, both the same drug bupropion, Zyban being approved by the FDA under a different brand name for the indication of smoking cessation. These are part of the class of norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI). Anti-depressants, as a broad pharmacological class, increase chemical levels in the brain such as dopamine and serotonin, that are thought to increase mood, the same way nicotine works. But anti-depressants are unfortunately associated with many negative side effects like nausea, tremor, a decreased sex drive, and fatigue, all the while showing limited efficacy due to treating just one of the difficulties associated with nicotine withdrawal.

The herb St. Johns Wort is a component in Quit Tea because of its properties as an anti-depressant and in helping reduce some of negative effects of nicotine withdrawal. St. Johns Wort has many pharmacological properties of an anti-depressants. One compound found in St. Johns Wort is hyperforin, which is most likely responsible for the anti-depressant effects. The hyperforin acts as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) like many anti-depressants. It is levels of serotonin in the brain are low, due to being absorbed too readily, that medical professionals have determined to cause depression.

The Cochorane Collaboration conducted a major review of St. Johns Wort that included over five thousand patients being treated for depression. A results from the Cochrane Collaboration study states. "the available evidence suggests that the hypericum extracts tested in the included trials a) are superior to placebo in patients with major depression; b) are similarly effective as standard antidepressants; and c) have fewer side effects than standard antidepressants."

If you would like to use anti-depressants to help you quit smoking, St. Johns Wort is an option that might work just as well for you as pharmaceutical anti-depressants without the side-effects.

Smokers like the idea of smoking cessation pills. Studies in America have shown that 80% of smokers think they should quit. Many of them think that smoking cessation pills have the answers they are looking for as they offer that potential miracle cure that will take the pain, anguish and torment of smoking cessation away from smokers. But is this really the case?

There are a number of treatments available to aid smoking cessation in the form of smoking cessation pills. There are also varying degrees of success associated with each type. The two most common types of smoking cessation pill that actually do have an effect are explained here.

The first smoking cessation pill I would like to consider is probably the best known; zyban. It was developed in the 1970s as a treatment for depression when it was marketed as wellbutrin. When researchers were conducting trials of the drug, they found that the test patients were reporting quitting smoking at a significant rate. This lead to further studies where the sole focus of the study was to determine the impact of wellbutrin on smokers.

Many studies have been completed since and it is commonly agreed now that 16% of smokers, who try to quit smoking using wellbutrin as their smoking cessation pill, will succeed after one year. I.e. they will quit at some point be smoke free one year after the course of treatment has been completed.

It is not known how zyban works specifically, but it is clear that it interferes with the normal brain chemistry associated with nicotine addiction.

The side effects most commonly reported are similar to the side effects suffered by any person quitting smoking. These side effects may be from the drug zyban itself or they may be from nicotine withdrawal. Significantly, any alcohol, heart or blood pressure problems will need careful consideration by your doctor if you wish to use zyban.

The most significant side effect associated with zyban is the 1 in 1000 siezure rate. This can be life threatening so is a serious consideration for any would be quitter. You dont want to kill yourself trying to quit smoking after all!

The second smoking cessation pill I would like to consider is the new kid on the block. It is called varenicline and marketed as chantix in the US and as champix in the UK.

Pfizer, the manufacturer has claimed a 44% success rate in smoking cessation studies but there has been much criticism of their claims. Significantly, when Pfizer have sponsored studies into the effectiveness of chantix as a smoking cessation pill, they have been very stringent on which smokers are allowed into the group. It is thought that hardcore smokers or people who have serially been unable to quit smoking have been excluded in order to bump up success rates.

Independent reviews of all chantix studies have shown the truer success rate of chantix as a smoking cessation pill as being about 22%. This is not a huge success rate when compared to the claims initially made by Pfizer!

The most commonly cited side effects associated with chantix are those of nausea, sleep problems and weird dreams or nightmares. The other significant side effects are shared side effects found from nicotine withdrawal.

Due to the high rates of nausea, stomach cramps, feeling bloated, constipation or diarrhoea associated with chantix, up to 30% of patients have to abandon the treatment. Not mush fun if you have shelled out $300 for your smoking cessation pills only to find you cannot take the drug after all!

My advice is that smokers should try any non-pharmaceutical methods to quit smoking before they turn to smoking cessation pills such as chantix or zyban. Not only is there hypnosis that is very commonly known and probably as effective as chantix, there is also cognitive behavioural therapy that has very high success rates thought to be well over 50%.

As ever, every time you fail to quit smoking, you are one step closer to success. Never stop trying to quit.

Aids to Smoking Cessation

Is smoking a powerful addiction? Just ask anyone who has ever tried to quit. How can smoking cessation be easier? Well, smoking cessation can be a lot easier if you have these two basic fundamentals:- the necessary support and using a smoking cessation aid that is right for you.

Steps to Smoking Cessation

Decide to Quit
You may despise the cost, the smell and the hassle of smoking, not to mention the detrimental health risks, but in order for you to truly kick the smoking habit, you must make up your mind that it's time to stop. The first step in smoking cessation is for the smoker to decide to quit.

Seek Help and Expert Advice
You can ask your doctor to help motivate you, and also speak with your pharmacist. They will have pamphlets available on tons of stop smoking medication and tips, as well as a variety of stop smoking programs, self-help books, and even telephone hot lines. You can discuss which stop smoking aids would be most effective for you. Reach out to ex-smokers too and find out what worked for them.

Also, check with your insurance agent. The cost of your smoking cessation medication (e.g., a quit smoking pill), any counseling, as well as your stop smoking program may be covered by your insurance, alleviating any financial strain on your part.

Nicotine Gum and Patches
Try nicotine gum or nicotine patches as a smoking cessation aid. You chew nicotine gum when you have a craving for a cigarette. The gum contains nicotine. By chewing the gum, you gradually get your system used to living without nicotine. This eases your withdrawal symptoms and decreases your desire to smoke.

You wear a nicotine patch for 24 hours, and put a new one on every day. The patch puts nicotine into your system, and also allows your body to slowly adjust to life without nicotine. You use the most concentrated patches for the initial weeks and then gradually reduce the dosage over the following weeks. Both the nicotine gum and the nicotine patch are smoking cessation aids intended to be used for about three months.

There are other types of medical treatments for smoking cessation in the form of nicotine replacement therapy which comes in lozenges, inhalers and nasal sprays. Check with your doctor to see if nicotine replacement therapy should be in your stop smoking program.

Prescription Quit Smoking Pills
Prescription medication in a pill form can be prescribed by your physician to aid in your smoking cessation. Zyban, for example, is a popular smoking cessation prescription pill that does not contain nicotine. Studies have shown that Zyban has helped smokers quit more easily than without the drug.

Unlike other nicotine replacement therapies, Zyban does not inject more nicotine into your system. With nicotine patches or gum, you should cease smoking so that your body doesn't take in too much nicotine. But with the Zyban smoking cessation program, you can go on smoking at the start of taking medication. Set a 'final smoking date', and then continue with Zyban after this quitting date.

Treatment with Zyban has shown to reduce some of the nasty withdrawal side effects of quitting smoking such as irritability, frustration, anger, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, restlessness and depression. Zyban also reduced the craving for a cigarette and the desire to smoke.

Herbal Quit Smoking Alternatives
If you prefer to go the all natural way, then you can try a herbal-based stop smoking program. Herbal treatments, in the form of pills or patches, are a smoking cessation option without the use of nicotine or drugs. This all natural homeopathic formula removes your desire to smoke using natural herbs and extracts. If you do smoke while using the herbal treatment, it would leave a very unpleasant taste in your mouth. Taking the pleasure out of smoking makes it an easy habit to drop.

Find the Plan for You and Quit for Good
There are many smoking cessation options available today. The key is to find the ideal smoking cessation option that fits your personality and your lifestyle. Create a custom made stop smoking plan that is perfect for you, and you will be butting out for the last time and cashing in on a smoke free lifestyle.

You are planning to quit smoking and you are not one of those people to do things without careful planning. You are going to start with careful investigation of the many smoking cessation plans that can be found online and other places. It is important to investigate the full program before making a decision for which is right for you. You do not want to start a difficult to follow smoking cessation program.

You may also want to consider all of the components of the plan, from the time it will take to complete to the additional items that you might need to buy. Some programs will teach you how to quit smoking, but will only do so at a price. You may have to buy special vitamins or books, tapes and other items to complete the program as written. You may find that you are jumping through hoops to stop smoking and feeling frustrated and overwhelmed.

The right plan to stopping smoking is the one that you will actually be able to follow. If you do not believe in taking a lot of supplements or vitamins, nor do you want to take special pills to stop smoking. You will have to look for a natural way to stop smoking instead. But, there are people who are not interested in learning how to stop smoking without the help of pills or other items. It is important for those people to find a program that gives real support to them.

There are dozens of plans to consider when you are ready to give up smoking. You have to weigh the plans to see which will work for you and which will not. There is no such thing as a one size fits all program to stop smoking, everyone has different needs and different ways that they smoke. Some people smoke less than others. Some people only smoke in certain situations and at certain times of the day. All plans to help you quit smoking have to address all of these factors or they won't work at all.

There are also other factors to consider as well. If you are a person who has a problem with smoking when you are stressed or when you have emotional problems you have to have a stop smoking problem that will address those moments effectively. You have to keep from worrying about the coming days, you have to focus on the here and now. Stop smoking for your health and better life, but don't do in the wrong ways. Don't use the excuses that so many people hide behind to keep from stopping. You want to stop smoking but you don't want to gain a lot of weight. You want to stop smoking but you don't want to be crabby with the people around you. You can learn to deal with these problems no matter what your smoking cessation program might be comprised of.

Make a resolution today that you will quit smoking. If you make excuses and delay smoking cessation, lung cancer or respiratory problems may force you to do so. Nowadays, aids for smoking cessation are available so you do not even have the chance to use the age-old excuse, "I am trying, but it is difficult." It is no longer hard to quit smoking with the latest smoking cessation drug from Pfizer. This drug is proven to work better than cold turkey method and bupropion in clinical trials. In addition, as Champix does not contain Pfizer, it has an edge over nicotine replacement therapies such as nicotine gums, patches, and lozenges.

Champix working

Champix is not a magic bullet but its working makes smoking cessation history magically. You can see a significant reduction in cravings to smoke when you take Champix. Your brain is tricked into believing that you are getting nicotine, as Champix binds to nicotine receptors in the brain. This helps reduce withdrawal symptoms. You get no pleasure in smoking when you begin treatment with Champix, as it does not allow nicotine in cigarettes to attach to the nicotine receptors and affect your brain.

Safety of Champix

Safety is the most important issue that arises in minds of people who plan to take any prescription drug inclusive of Champix. Well, Champix is definitely safer than smoking as it is non-addictive in nature, does not lead to cancer, gangrene or any fatal diseases that smoking causes. However, this does not mean that there are no side effects of Champix. Many people who take Champix feel nauseous and dizzy. Some people even get stomach upset when they take Champix and vomit. Some people often get depressed, have sleeping problems and feel irritated when they take Champix. However, these symptoms also arise when a person quits smoking, so it is difficult to say whether they are Champix side effects or not.

If you want to quit smoking, ask your doctor if Champix is safe for you or not. If he gives you a nod, then you can then you should seriously go for it. make a quit plan that covers a wide range of topics such as problems you might face when you quit smoking and solutions for it; triggers that make you light up; rewards when you stay smoke-free for the first month, second and so on.

Laser treatment for smoking cessation may sound like an odd approach since lasers are used more for surgeries and cosmetic procedures in mainstream medicine. More common techniques to stop smoking are hypnotherapy, nicotine replacement patches or gum, and acupuncture. Now beams of light are also used in clinics to help smokers finally quit this unhealthy habit.

This new method is used in a similar manner to acupuncture, where different points on the body are stimulated to release endorphins. Theoretically, the endorphins help to alleviate a person's craving for nicotine. Practitioners use a "cool beam" laser, so the patient does not feel any pain. Like acupuncture, the light treatments may require more than a single session to be completely effective. The beams are not invasive and they do not involve drugs or other chemicals. There are no negative side effects to this new method as long as the technician uses proper procedures. A downside to consider is the higher cost of this method compared to traditional ones. One must also note that like any of the other therapies mentioned, there is no guarantee of success. However, for those who have tried the other techniques and were not successful, lasers just may be worth a go.

There are many varying professional opinions online about laser treatment for smoking cessation. Some claim it is not effective and a waste of money, while others cite large success rates for this treatment. In the end, it does provide another viable and safe option to people who struggle to stop smoking for good.

Smoking cessation drugs cause side effects; some are severe while some are little less severe. Doctors educate people on these effects even while prescribing them.

Smoking cessation drugs work by changing the chemical constituents of your brain albeit artificially. When you smoke, nicotine causes a change in brain chemicals and you feel elated, happy, and feel a sense of well being. These drugs create similar situation. You get the same feeling without smoking cigarettes.

However, your health deteriorates due to change in body chemicals. These translate into side effects. You suffer side effects during the prescribed pill therapy period of eight to twelve weeks. Even thereafter, you can suffer from similar side effects for a very long period.

Sometime, side effects prove very difficult to bear and you feel whether it was better to smoke than try to quit smoking. Many a time, you start different addictions like drinking soda or other sugary beverages, munching on snacks, and others. These cause excessive weight gain. You adopt another unhealthy lifestyle.

Smoking cessation drugs can be harmful and cause long-term pain and suffering. Some perpetuate other health disorders and you suffer major health setbacks. You develop kidney ailments, heart problems, stomach and liver disorders, breathlessness, and suffer from mental problems like depression or anxiety.

Instead of a pill you may want to try an all natural method to stop smoking to avoid the costs and side effects related to medications. The most successful natural stop smoking method is NLP.

NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming and it is a branch of psychotherapy that has proven to be extremely successful as a stop smoking method. It works so well because it targets and eliminates the cravings to smoke. In a recent test of 5,000 smokers that participated in an NLP session to quit smoking 97.2% of them were still smoke free six months later. That success rate far exceeds the success rate of any smoking cessation drugs.

Take a test of one of the more popular anti-smoking medications. During the 12 weeks that patients were using the drug a little less than 50% were able to stop smoking. But what about long-term results? The number falls from 50% to 25% after one year. So the successful results they may advertise are not necessarily long-term and smokers may have to go through several rounds of the drug until they finally quit smoking fro a long period of time.

Smoking cessation drugs also have health risks and serious side effects. These side effects range from the physical to the psychological. Introduction

The vast majority of smokers who cease smoking permanently smoking do so without any type of medication (eg Lee and Kahende, Am J Public Health 97: 1503-1509, 2007). Most people who have quit smoking successfully have either used cold turkey or reducing smoking prior to stopping.

The aim of this article is to examine cold turkey in combination with positive thinking as a method of smoking cessation.

First attempt to stop smoking

In general, the first attempt to stop smoking is unlikely to be successful. The individual needs to be committed in order to have a good chance of quitting. One of the reasons that early attempts to cease smoking may be unsuccessful are because they are not serious attempts (Chapman et al.,PLoS Medicine Public Library of Science 7, 2010).

Cold turkey

"Cold turkey" is the sudden arrest of the use of nicotine in any form. It has been estimated that, at least 80% of people who have successfully stopped smoking have used this method (Doran et al. Addict Behav. 31:758-66, 2006).

The Advantages of using Cold Turkey as a Smoking Cessation Method

There are 2 principle advantages of using cold turkey to quit smoking.

1. It is cheaper.

2. The process of quitting nicotine is completed much faster. In fact, you have stopped using nicotine the day you put out your last cigarette.

How Positive Thinking may help you to Stop Smoking

I was a 30 a day smoker myself for over 30 years. During the last 10 years, I made many attempts to become a non-smoker. The method I used to stop smoking was cold turkey.

I finally succeeded in stopping smoking with the help of positive thinking. I found that it was a relatively stress-free way of stopping.

Believing that you will succeed appears to be an important factor in smoking cessation. A study of ex-smokers who had used cold turkey as the method to quit smoking indicated that 53% found that stopping was "not at all difficult"; 27% found it "fairly difficult", and only 20% found it very difficult (Chapman et al,. PLoS Medicine Public Library of Science 7, 2010).

This is where positive thinking comes in. Positive thinkers are more likely to believe that they can stop.

The Happy Ex-Smoker

After I stopped smoking, I felt very positive. In addition, I found that when I was facing another short-term challenge in life, I was able to use the same techniques that I used to stop smoking. I am now much more resilient to challenges having a negative effect on me. Moreover, my positive thoughts have improved my social life and has provided me with a variety of exciting opportunities in life.

If you have been on the edge about using hypnosis to quit smoking, I want to forewarn you on the 2 reasons why most people fail to quit smoking when using this method or any other stop-smoking method available.

The first reason that people fail to quit smoking is...
They believe that it's going to be hard and difficult to quit! With this belief and mindset they are already defeating themselves before they even start. Think about those gigantic task we have in our lives. The things we think will take the most mental energy to face. Sometimes it's the thought of facing it that robs us of more mental energy than actually facing the task.

So before throwing in the towel with the whole "It will just be too hard to quit speech" think about how much stress that your so-called stress-reliever pack of cigarettes are causing you in the first place.

The second reason why so many people fail to quit smoking is because...
They do not have a good enough reason to quit smoking. We all know that smoking is extremely bad to one's health and can ultimately lead to lung cancer. But what about the benefits of not smoking. The liberty and freedom that comes with it.

Take some time and make a list of all the benefits you think you will have in your life if you quit smoking. Think about the increase health. The years you have just added to your life, the confidence and glow that you would have, the increased confidence and self esteem. Finally being able to get sound sleep at night.

Take that list and place it where you will see it every morning and every night. In the bathroom mirror, on the refrigerator, a sticky note on those pack of cigarettes if you really want some cool points.

Since the American Medical Association (AMA) approved the use of clinical hypnosis in the 1950's, hundreds of thousands of people have found hypnosis to be an effective way to stop smoking, lose weight, and otherwise improve their lives. For smoking cessation, many hypnotists now even offer a one-time, half-hour individualized session. Since most insurance typically does not cover for hypnosis, the fee-for-service for this half-hour session can be more affordable than other treatments. Although some people may benefit from group hypnosis, most appear to find individual sessions as preferable.

Each singular session often consists of a brief discussion of one's prior smoking behavior and common reasons why people might initially smoke; a discussion of the hypnotic process; reinforcement of one's conscious motivators for wanting to quit; and a simple hypnotic trance induction with a post-hypnotic suggestion for smoking cessation. Most are quite susceptible to hypnotic suggestion, if it's consistent with something desired.

It is not uncommon for many two-pack a day, twenty-plus years smokers to quit, after their first session. Subsequent to in-person treatment, following-up with a self-hypnosis audio program for smoking cessation is recommended. Reinforcing the hypnotic suggestions by listening to your self-hypnosis recording daily, for at least two weeks, should help to ensure a more positive treatment outcome.

Since 1992, according to New Scientist, it has been known that "Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking." Its quote was based upon a study cited within the Journal of Applied Psychology, earlier that same year.

There even exists evidence based clinical research that single-session hypnosis can be just as effective (if not more effective) than any other smoking cessation treatment program available. Although I often recommend combining hypnosis sessions with another treatment approach, which your family physician or pharmacist can recommend, it is not a necessity for efficacy

The best indicators of success, with this approach to quitting, are one's prior ability to have successfully quit for at least one month; and one's desire today to be smoke-free. Self-hypnosis audio recordings and smoking cessation readings appear to serve as a nice complement to the individualized session. The Internet provides an array of free quit smoking aides, including smoking cessation MP3 downloads!
