Are you thinking about using smoking cessation drugs to help you quit smoking? There is some important information you may want to know before you decide to start using smoking cessation medications.

Millions of smokers are turning to drug-makers to help them quit their smoking habit. They see and hear the advertisements offering hope that a little pill can help them to finally quit smoking. But just how successful are these smoking cessation medications and what price do smokers have to pay to quit smoking with a pill?

Studies conducted by the pharmaceutical companies themselves do not show very promising results. The drugs are approved by the FDA because they are shown in studies to be more effective than a placebo. But it is not hard to beat a placebo and some of the success rates are skewed to only show success while the drug is actually being used.

Take a test of one of the more popular anti-smoking medications. During the 12 weeks that patients were using the drug a little less than 50% were able to stop smoking. But what about long-term results? The number falls from 50% to 25% after one year. So the successful results they may advertise are not necessarily long-term and smokers may have to go through several rounds of the drug until they finally quit smoking fro a long period of time.

Smoking cessation drugs also have health risks and serious side effects. These side effects range from the physical to the psychological. Closer listens to advertisements reveal warnings about suicidal behaviors and mood swings. These kinds of warnings can be scary to people who are looking to quit smoking.

There are also high expenses related to using smoking cessation medications. Smokers may have to use the medications for a long period of time (up to 12 weeks) for them to work. If they do not work the first time they may have to go through another round of use adding to the expense. A lot of times these medications are not covered by insurance plans.

The good news is that there are natural methods to quit smoking that are more effective than smoking cessation drugs and do not include the expenses and side effects associated with medications. More and more smokers are turning to these natural alternatives to quit smoking as they become more educated about the true nature of smoking cessation drugs.

One of the most effective natural techniques to quit smoking is called NLP, or Neuro Linguistic Programming. This is a form of hypnotherapy that the smoker can administer to themselves by simply listening to an audio recording. It offers a very high rate of success and, as a form of hypnotherapy, it does not have any of the scary or unpleasant side effects of smoking cessation drugs.
