A lot of people take up smoking to create an image about them selves that is acceptable in their social circles. It ends up as nicotine addiction and an awful habit that is difficult to break. The bodies of these people are used to nicotine as a coping mechanism in situations they find stressful - all that happens is that the nicotine dependency habit is perpetuated without these situations being resolved. Some people use the smoking habit overcome eating habits and when attempts are made to stop smoking then food and other things act as an oral support and weight gain results.

Wellbutrin is actually Bupropion which was repackaged as Zyban by the manufacturer after it was accidentally discovered that Wellbutrin treatments decreased cigarette and nicotine cravings in people suffering from depression. The medication was repackaged by Glaxo-Smith-Kline as Zyban as an aid to stop smoking.

Zyban does not add nicotine to a persons system (as with patches) but decreases cravings. A person takes the medication while still smoking and sets a date by which to stop. After stopping they will still take the medication which continues to decrease cravings while the quitting process goes ahead.

Research findings published in Nicotine and Tobacco Research in February 2004 showed that often women experience greater difficulty stopping smoking and maintaining abstinence than men do - common obstacles in women were fear of weight gain and depression. However, Zyban (Bupropion / Wellbutrin) helped women achieve the same success rates as men.

Not all people can use Zyban (Wellbutrin) to stop smoking. Anyone who suffers from epilepsy or other seizure disorders and eating disorders like bulimia nervosa or anorexia nervosa can not take the medication. Overdosing is also easy on Wellbutrin and if other forms of medication are being taken, or taking of sedatives is stopped suddenly, chances of triggering a seizure are increased. People using MAOI inhibitors for treatment of depression can not use Wellbutrin (Zyban).

People who use Wellbutrin for treatment of depression can not use Zyban to help stop smoking. Contact a doctor if worsening or new symptoms occur like behavior and mood changes, panic attacks, anxiety, sleeping problems or displays of hostility, agitation and restlessness.

People with high blood pressure, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, head injury and bipolar dysfunction must avoid using Wellbutrin to help stop smoking. People with diabetes or those who take steroids and use sedatives and alcohol must also avoid Wellbutrin as the risk of side effects is increased.
