Starting a bad habit such as smoking is easy. Stopping the bad habit is a different story. Today, there a number of products and techniques that are available to help you stop smoking. Cold turkey is the probably the most difficult way to stop; there is also special gum to chew or patches to wear. Hypnosis is a relatively old but effective process and is being discovered by many smokers. Using hypnosis to stop smoking is a very effective and useful tool that almost anyone can use.

The thought of using hypnosis may seem unconventional for some, but for those who have tried it are glad that they did. Hypnosis, including self-hypnosis, is composed of several parts that make the process very effective. Relaxation, visualization and scripts are all key components to a hypnotic session. If you are using self-hypnosis, relaxation is a crucial step. You must be able to be completely open to suggestions and accept what is being heard during a session.

Scripts are words or key phrases that are suggestions which provide information as to why the change is necessary. Scripts are to be positive, in the present tense and should be repeated throughout the session. In conjunction with scripts, visualization is crucial to emphasizing the scripts to stop smoking. When using hypnosis to stop smoking, if your subconscious is willing to listen to the suggestions, the visuals that your mind creates from the scripts can be very powerful and beneficial to the process.

For many of us, visualizing helps us to better understand what we need to do; there are many benefits to using visualization during a hypnosis session. The first several times that visualization occurs, you may find yourself forming pictures of yourself in the third person. This is called dissociated visualization; an effective tool that works with hypnosis to stop smoking. During this process, you are able to see yourself be free of cigarettes as if you have already stopped smoking.

When visualizing, the first step is to know that you will stop smoking. If you can see this and you believe it, it will be as if you have already stopped. This will help you get through the process because you can see yourself smoke-free and that you made it past the negative feelings you don't want to deal with. Using images and scenes that appeal and relate to you can help guide you through the entire process and achieve your ultimate goal.

Emotions are very powerful and influence each one of us at many levels. Emotions affect our subconscious and influence our behaviors. Visualizing then is important. Using strong and positive words along with the visuals will move you faster towards your goal to stop smoking cigarettes. Words such as "beautiful", "exciting", "powerful", or "radiant" are all good words to use. The more real and intense that the images are, the more effective the suggestions will be.

What should you visualize when using hypnosis to stop smoking? You can begin with images that you no longer want to see or be part of such as images of smoke, of you coughing or breathing hard while walking up a flight of stairs. If the relaxation step is successful, you can even taste tobacco and smell the smoke. These images should then change to pictures of you stopping smoking and then not smoking at all.
